(National) NAACP Head Says Vick Must Be Held Responsible

WASHINGTON (AP) - Falcons quarterback Michael Vick "is not a victim" and should be held responsible for his actions involving a dogfighting ring in Virginia, the national president of the NAACP said Thursday.

"He absolutely must account for what he has done," Dennis Courtland Hayes, interim president and CEO of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, said in an interview with The Associated Press. He had earlier given similar comments to NBC's "Today" show.

But Hayes cautioned against condemning the Atlanta star too quickly.

"It's real clear that Mr. Vick himself would acknowledge that he has made a mistake," Hayes said. "I think there is reason to believe in his redemption."

Those of you that have read my animal rights posts like the Canadian harp seals know how I feel about animals. Michael Vick just happens to be black. I'm a Packer fan. If this had been Favre or any other player, I would still be just as outraged. I learned from my 1/2 Native American Indian dad to judge people by the content of their character, not the color of their skin. I hope everybody understands the point I'm trying to make.

He should pay like anyone else - with prison time.

Who in their right mind in a civil rights organization defends horrid animal abuse, gambling and racketeering anyway? Jeez. REALLY, REALLY reflected poorly on them, and stoked some EXTREMELY negative stereotypes here in the south, as if they needed it. Talk radio was vitriolic the past two days with bile against the NAACP for defending this.

Really a stupid fucking decision on their part.

discredit the NAACP. I appreciate their looking into the matter seriously....their assessment is on target.

This was the right choice. Michael Vick is a monster.
