Warner may back Dems' bill on withdrawal

By HOPE YEN, Associated Press Writer 4 minutes ago

WASHINGTON - GOP Sen. John Warner, who wants U.S. troops to start coming home from Iraq by Christmas, said Sunday he may support Democratic legislation ordering withdrawals if President Bush refuses to set a return timetable soon.

"I'm going to have to evaluate it," Warner said. "I don't say that as a threat, but I say that is an option we all have to consider."

Warner, a former Navy Secretary and one-time chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, is seen as someone who could influence the debate among senators who have grown increasingly uneasy about the unpopular war.

Warner's suggestion last week about bringing back some troops put him at odds with Bush, who has insisted that conditions on the ground should dictate any such decisions. Warner long has opposed legislation pushing for timetables.

2. Sen. John Edwards,
But former Democratic Sen. John Edwards, a 2008 presidential candidate, said he believed even stronger pressure was needed to reduce bloodshed and force political compromise in Iraq, regardless of what top military advisers say in their progress report next month.

Every defense funding bill Congress sends to Bush should set a timetable for Iraq, and Democrats should be willing to filibuster if necessary to force action, he said.

"Although they haven't done squat yet, I would give (al-Maliki) and the Sunnis at least a few months to reach a compromise. But they've got to know there's a deadline," Edwards said while campaigning in New Hampshire.

It's the vote that counts, not a bloviating press conference or some out of context quote from Meet the Press.

5. In Washington ...
In Washington, this kind of thing does matter.
Just the idea that a big Republican is "evaluating" the Dem bill is impressive and will make other evaluate it as well.

Warner is testing his constituency.
If his evaluation is met with little or no outrage, he may push forward with this.

I look forward to seeing how this unfolds.

7. Yup. 'Arlen' Warner is the new false voice of reason among Repukes
He would NEVER vote for a Dem bill unless it was first sabotaged by DLC Dems and Repukes.

This guy is simply the new John McCain/Arlen Specter. He will do NOTHING.

8. What kind of signal
does any of this send us?

-If in September, 'perhaps as few as 5,000 -- would send a "sharp, clear message" to Iraq, America and the world that the U.S. commitment in Iraq isn't open-ended.'

I mean, it seems as if now that the politicians that are pulling the strings on the war are really making it very obvious to everyone watching how plain they have been in their own vanity. A war with plenty of shame to spread on many different sides of the aisle. Politicians should be concerned about saving a life instead of just face.

Mid-September the insurgents (whomever they are) will find a common cause to shoot at a fleeing soldier that has only been seen as an occupier. Bush has the bully pulpit but seems more concerned about his own legacy than other people's lives. After reading that Rolling Stone article which really put this cause into perspective I tend to have many doubts about this leadership on all levels. I hope until the next election we can extricate ourselves with the least amount of danger from the policies of the current administration.

-Peace Out

He'll sign on with the Republicans at the final hour. That's how it works. These 'independent' Republicans usually end up falling in line despite whatever opposition they voice ahead of time.

Prove me wrong, Senator, just prove me wrong.
