Australia to Slaughter 350 Cows From U.S.
The Australian government plans to ask ranchers to slaughter 350 cows imported from the United States to prevent the spread of mad cow disease, a newspaper reported Saturday.

The government also plans to tighten screening of Australian cattle more than 30 months old following the discovery last month of the first U.S. case of mad cow disease. The disease has an incubation period of at least three years.

Didn't you get the news? There is no threat. Ann Venemman said so. You need more proof?

(On a less sacastic note) I'm not sure how it would "spread".

2. Bull Crap
This article doesn't pass the smell test. The brief articles talk about expensive controls, Animal Health Australia have no press release about this on their website.

This is a beat up to generate sympathy for the US beef market, which is trying to re-open the Japanese market, to which Australian beef now has cornered the market as a result.

3. in this Australia is making the same mistake the US made
One day BSE will come, it probably is already there (IMHO it is everywhere and always was).
What is need are measures to test and track cattle, protect consumers and (wishfully thinking) get rid of industrial meat production and processing.

6. Either the beef industry allow re-regulation of the industry or this will
Edited on Sat Jan-03-04 09:56 PM by w4rma
continue to happen in more and more countries who they want to sell their beef to.

They want to know they can trust beef from America, and the lax regulations and seemingly poor record keeping are not helping matters.

7. Is Australia feeding their beef rendered animal products?
Like the US and Canada? If so, they will wind up with the same problem and it doesn't matter how many cows from the US that they kill. Cows are not carnivores. And until the cattle producers stop that sickening vile practice we will continue to have problems.

8. BSE
Has been in the USA since 1964, you just haven't been told.
The FDA is run by members of the industry they are supposed to control, do you really think they are going to do the right thing and ban animal cannibalism?
There will never be a cure for the human form of BSE. It's a complex prion more complicated that dna. People die from it in the usa already, your just never told. A good number of all altzhiemer type cases are actualy mad cow cases.
Those rendering plamts will NEVER give up feeding animal feed, it's worth billions a year to them.
