'White power' chanted during immigration discussion at school

BROOMFIELD – It started with a simple question and ended with at least one student chanting "white power" in a classroom.

It happened Tuesday in a classroom at Holy Family High School, the Catholic school that sits at the corner of 144th Avenue and Sheridan Boulevard in Broomfield.

The classroom discussion started with the question: Why do students need to learn Spanish?

According to the Archdiocese of Denver, the conversation soon became about immigration and it turned ugly.

"It became a heated discussion and some rhetoric was used that was inappropriate for the classroom," said Jeanette DeMelo, spokesperson for the Archdiocese of Denver.

In defense of the school it sounds like they handled this appropriately.

1. Sounds like mountains being made of mole hills.
The big headline:

'White power' chanted during immigration discussion at school

the little reality:

with at least one student chanting "white power"

"at least one student" sounds like maybe two kids being dumb and its a national news item.

5. That's what worries me a little.
I totally agree its very innapropriate, but our buttons shouldn't be quite so easy to push that a highschool kid saying something innapropriate creates national news.

24. Maybe it's a good sign
at least the undercurrent of racism in this country isn't always swept under the rug...

22. I think you're right
I hope the teacher had the smarts to lead some kind of discussion about why the kid did it, what he thought it meant, what others thought it meant, etc.

Of course, in some school districts a teacher would be fired for holding such a rational discussion of the reality of racism and the prevalence of racist thought and deed in USAmerica.

I'm more appalled at some of the attitudes displayed by some of the responses on this thread.

23. Unfotunately It Most Likely Wasn't A Joke
Colorado is a hotbed of racist activity -- the National Alliance has a national office somewhere in the state and they have managed to whip the rurals into a frenzy of bigotry over the past few years.

Denver is super-progressive and a damn cool city but some of the outlying regions get scaaary fast....and of course, Focus on the Family is in Colorado SPrings, so there is plenty of rightwing hate to go around!

Maybe they like Clarence Bigsby (Dasve Chappelle) or White Power Bob on Fox's Arrested Development.

7. Some teenagers will do anything to annoy their teachers
If there are not many black kids in their school, they probably figure it's low-risk activity.

Making a big deal out of this plays right into the hands of these idiots.

13. I don't know....
There was a guy in my geography class in High school who was REALLY a white supremacist. He was an outward apologist for Hitler and he wasn't even deluded enough to think that the Holocaust didn't happen. He thought it was justified. This crackpot was in no way just looking for attention, or looking for a way to create controversy. He was a white supremacist. Don't try to make it seem like its just a ploy to bug teachers.

One thing is for certain: there is no stopping them; they will soon be here. I’d like to remind them that as a trusted TV personality, I can be helpful in rounding up others to toil in their underground sugar caves.

18. Now HERE'S the right reaction to this sort of crap
Clowns KKKick KKK ass!

http://asheville.indymedia.org/article/107Clowns

----------

“White Power!” the Nazi’s shouted, “White Flour?” the clowns yelled back running in circles throwing flour in the air and raising separate letters which spelt “White Flour”.

“White Power!” the Nazi’s angrily shouted once more, “White flowers?” the clowns cheers and threw white flowers in the air and danced about merrily.

“White Power!” the Nazi’s tried once again in a doomed and somewhat funny attempt to clarify their message, “ohhhhhh!” the clowns yelled “Tight Shower!” and held a solar shower in the air and all tried to crowd under to get clean as per the Klan’s directions.

19. This is really sad
Edited on Sat Sep-01-07 01:19 PM by ProudDad
there are some posts on this thread that are parroting the same lame excuses for dismissing the reality of racism in USAmerica that I heard white people blather in the South during Jim Crow.

I guess there really HAS BEEN NO real progress since the 50s...

Silly me, I thought there had been a little progress but I was mistaken...

The only "progress" seems to be that thanks to the repub dominated M$M, the do-nothings/say-nothings/hear-nothings of all parties, some people, even some of alleged "good will", have allowed the subject to be swept under the rug and just think happy thoughts about how racism against people of color just isn't the issue it used to be.

Damn...

--------------

According to this article the "white power" chant was one stupid kid for whatever reason.

What's REALLY disheartening is some of the ignorant, racist responses in this thread.

20. Right you are...
It also echoes RW talking points about race that date back to the Civil Rights Backlash of the early '70s onward:

"Affirmative action is reverse discrimination."

"Race-based preferences are racist."

What's even worse? His Supremeness John Roberts has practically said these exact words IN HIS OPINIONS! In other words, right-wing rhetoric is now THE LAW OF THE LAND.

And to think some on DU can't even see it for the turn-back-the-clock garbage that it is.

:banghead:

Now, THIS is what I think of when I think of Black Power:

I had chills running down my spine when I viewed the courage of those two men back in '68. Thanks for posting it...

Of course, racist USAmerica made sure that Tommie Smith and John Carlos paid dearly for their act of courage...

That image has stuck with me my whole life. In the context of what else was going on at the time (riots, MLK, Vietnam, Wallace, etc.) even at age 7 I knew this meant something important.
