Anti-communist Congressman Charles Vanik dies at 94
Source: Russia Today

Charles Vanik, a former Democratic Congressman, has died in Florida at the age of 94. He co-sponsored the controversial Jackson-Vanik Amendment in 1974, which forbid normal trade with communist states who stopped their citizens from emigrating.

The ruling is still applied to Russia, despite the country's move to a market economy and the lifting of emigration restrictions. It has proved a key barrier to Russia's entry to the World Trade Organisation.

Critics of the Amendment continue to call for its abolition, saying it amounts to trade discrimination and is irrelevant since the end of the Cold War.

4. Vito Marcantonio
"Marcantonio, who was arguably one of the furthest left wing Members of Congress in history, believed that party loyalty was less important than voting his conscience. He was sympathetic to Socialist and Communist parties, as well as labor unions and was investigated by the FBI as many were suspicious of him because of his sympathy with communism and ties to the Communist Party. In 1940, he helped form the American Peace Mobilization to keep the U.S. from participating in World War II, and served as its vice-chair"
