Afghans: Seoul Paid Hostage Ransom After Reported Taliban Rapes
Edited on Sat Sep-01-07 07:26 PM by cali
Source: ABC News

South Korea paid the Taliban $950,000 -- or $50,000 a head -- to secure the release of 19 church workers abducted in southeastern Afghanistan, Afghan officials who took part in the negotiations told ABC News.

The negotiations took on urgency, the Afghan officials said, after two female hostages who were released last month reported being repeatedly raped by their Taliban captors.

The kidnappers also killed two of the male hostages, who were abducted six weeks ago riding by bus through southeastern Ghazni province.

"We have reports the various Taliban commanders were fighting over the women hostages," said Mirajuddin Pathan, the governor of Ghazni province. "They were abused over and over."

1. I never mind when a Taliban man is killed. Never.
Some of them were murdered horribly when we first went in and people on DU cried at the horror. Not me. Those sweeties earned their deaths and the damnation that followed.

But that isn't why we're in Afghanistan and we should leave.

3. Who on DU whined when Taliban men were killed?
The Taliban is just the type of regressive troglodyte club we should be happy to see collapse.

7. Maybe Being Shot With a Chocolate-Flavored Gun...
...is a 'nice' way of being murdered?

Gassed to death with Febreze?

Hung with a licorice whip?

Electrocuted to death by multiple orgasms?

17. Remember - transported in enclosed trucks
without air. When some of the trucks were opened, dead just spilled out.

There was ots and lots of talk and condemnation of it at the time here on DU. It was around the time Mazar-I-Sharif surrendered and all the sudden the northern alliance had thousands and thousands of prisoners and there were just a handful of CIA guys on the ground with them. Then the prisoners erupted and killed the one CIA guy and the American Taliban showed up after the uprising was crushed.

10. You had to remind me.
And then I think of the courageous people who saved the art in the museums by painting over it...and I worry what will happen to all of that when we leave.

But we still have no right to stay.

18. And those guys in the containers were actually Taliban?
Edited on Sun Sep-02-07 03:17 PM by Orangeone
Knowing the northern alliance, they were probably just rounded up a random or surrendered because they were forcibly conscripted and didn't want to fight. Like it would have been ok, even if they were Taliban! In reports about 'Taliban' deaths, just replace Taliban with Afghans and then it's probably more accurate.

But they deserved it because of those buddha statues, right? <sarcasm>

I meant to hit reply to an earlier post at the top...but when someone brought up those statues I had to say something.

9. In the book, "Charlie Wilson's War", it was reported and later confirmed.
By the CIA, that our Afghan allies, Taliban included, were fucking the goddamned mules we sent them to transport supplies.

They also had a nasty habit of raping captured Russian soldiers to death.

13. There are no actual allegations in the story
If this is true, let's hear it from the women involved. I will assume it is propaganda until then.

14. Of course, you must be right,
People who kidnapped this group and murdered them, would never stoop to rape. I'll assume it's true, considering their actions.

19. U.S. forces kidnap and kill foreigners, pretty much at will
That doesn't mean they rape them, too.

Kidnapping usually has a political goal. Sometimes murder does too. Rape doesn't usually (except perhaps as a way to induce terror).

At any rate, I am waiting for some allegations from named sources. The hostages are free now, so that ought to be easy.
