Senate Rejects Bid to Boost Homeland Security Funding
GOP Blocks Homeland Security Boost

Senate Republicans yesterday turned back the first of several Democratic attempts to add to proposed spending for homeland security next year, ensuring the issue a role in the 2004 congressional elections.

A proposal by Sen. Robert C. Byrd (D-W.Va.) to add $1.75 billion to the $29.3 billion appropriations bill for the new Department of Homeland Security was defeated on a largely party-line vote of 50 to 43 -- 17 votes short of the 60 needed under Senate rules because the proposal exceeded budget allocations.

4. I'm torn because...
Although I want our first responders to get the funding and equipment they need to handle any disasters that come our way, I want to see our next President dismantle the Department of Homeland Security. This department has done more harm than good to our nation (re: HS agents being dragged into the Texas redistricting mess) and poses yet another threat to our civil rights.

6. Because HS innitiatives are sqeezing local budgets
Homeland Security (other than rearranging personnel and office furniture in DC) is amounting to little more than an unfunded mandate. Local budgets cannot keep up with extra demands for

- more cops on the beat at certain times (every time they move up the terror color chart),
- specialized equipment to deal with things like chemical attacks and anthrax.
