Letter bomb explodes at EU parliament

BRUSSELS (Reuters) - A letter bomb sent to the head of the largest political group in the European Parliament has exploded but hurt nobody, says a spokesman for the European People's Party.

The letter was sent to German Christian Democrat Hans-Gert Poettering and opened by an employee.

"It caught fire, there was a bang. Nobody was hurt," Robert Fitzhenry told Reuters.

1. If all it did was catch fire...

...and there was no explosion then technically it's an "incendiary device" nor a "bomb". Yes, I know it's journalistic shorthand, but still. I tend to agree with the Ambassador to China. A lot of damage has been caused by people using journalistic shorthand, not the least of which is the dumbing down of America which in part led to the election of Bush.

3. and another one: British MEP Targeted in Letter Bomb Attack

A letter bomb caught fire at the offices of a senior British MEP today, but no-one was hurt.

It was addressed to Gary Titley, leader of the UK Labour members and was opened by a member of his staff in his office in Radcliffe in Greater Manchester.

It was the third confirmed device targeted on Euro-MPs and the first known to have been sent to the UK.

Italian anarchists are believed to be behind the campaign.
