Iowa Republican Tort Reformer files dog bite case
Edited on Wed Jul-23-03 04:26 PM by Skinner
<http://www.theiowachannel.com/politics/2352246/detail.html>

A state senator who advocated legislation that would have done away with punitive damages now is seeking punitive damages over a dog bite he suffered while campaigning last summer.

Sen. Ron Wieck, 58, a Sioux City Republican and insurance agent, filed the lawsuit Friday. He's asking the dog owner to pay for past and future medical expenses, loss of damaged clothing, and pain and suffering, including anxiety and humiliation.

"The issue is that I, as a citizen of the state of Iowa, should have a right to collect for my damages," said Wieck, who said he sued after a year of unsuccessfully trying to collect from the dog owner's insurance company.

The lawsuit alleges Wieck was bitten and injured in the groin July 18, 2002, by a coon dog that charged out of Delray Goulette's house in Pierson while Wieck was campaigning door-to-door.

5. Hey... just like Senator Santorum, I believe
wants tort reform - but his wife is suing in a case for damages including pain and suffering. Don't remember the details but it sounds just like this case - including wanting to take advantage of the system while at the same time working to prevent other citizens from having the same course of redress.

17. Several years ago,
Little Ricky and his wife had a stillborn son. They sued the Obstetrician and/or the hospital, and reached a settlement of several hundred thousand dollars, IIRC. You see, it's okay for THEM to seek legal recourse, just not US.

9. Chopper sic (scumbag pol.'s) balls
What a hypocrite. The anti-tort reform thing comes from the mega-corps that call the shots in the GOP, and the true-believers are duped by it even though it is against their best interests. Thats the amzing thing the Right has done, they get millions of Americans to vote against their own best interests based on propaganda distributed by the likes of Limbaugh.

I hope he didn't get rabies.

Wait, I guess I shouldn't assume the dog was a male. I hope he/she didn't get rabies.

19. Clinton had it right
These scumbags preach personal responsibility until the cows come home. But scratch them (or bite their balls, either will do) and they go straight to blame. It must have been a bloodhound that bit him. It's the only dog with the patience to find this guy's sack.

22. Counsel for the defense should just read this ass's
legislation at the trial.

Of course, prosecution would try to have it kept from the jury.
