Policeman killed in northern Iraq, firefight leaves couple dead in Fallujah
BAGHDAD (AFP) - The top US official in Iraq, Paul Bremer, was due to announce Wednesday the imminent release of 100 Iraqi prisoners, with more to follow, in an apparent bid to promote reconciliation ahead of a handover of power in six months' time.
The US-led coalition will release 100 people from Iraqi prisons on Thursday, with hundreds more to be freed in coming weeks, Bremer was to say in a policy address, according to an advance copy of his speech obtained by AFP.
Bremer, with current interim Governing Council chairman Adnan Pachachi at his side, was also to unveil a 200,000-dollar reward program for the capture of more wanted individuals.<snip>
At least 10,000 people are currently detained by the coalition, of whom nearly 4,000 belong to the Iranian armed opposition group, the People's Mujahedeen. <snip>
In the latest of repeated attacks targeting Iraqi police working with the coalition, assailants raked a checkpoint with bullets Wednesday, killing a policeman and a civilian west of the northern city of Kirkuk. <snip>
A policeman was also killed on his way to work near the northeastern city of Baquba on Tuesday. <snip>
