Boy in court on terror charges (for owning book)
Source: BBC

Terror charges for owning book. Teen, released on bail, caught with copy of Anarchist's Cookbook.

A British teenager who is accused of possessing material for terrorist purposes has appeared in court.
The 17-year-old, who was arrested in the Dewsbury area of West Yorkshire on Monday, was given bail after a hearing at Westminster Magistrates' Court.

It is alleged he had a copy of the "Anarchists' Cookbook", containing instructions on how to make home-made explosives.

His next court hearing has been set for 25 October. The teenager faces two charges under the Terrorism Act 2000. The first charge relates to the possession of material for terrorist purposes in October last year.

7. What's even more insane than this...
The internet contains more knowledge of this nature than any other single source. Uh-oh...does that mean they're going to shut down the internet?

Actually, I wouldn't put that past these people....

6. i bought that book in 1972 but it was published in 1970
black cover, white writing
it was fashion back then--i never put it to "practical" use
whoever is pressing these charges against that kid needs to acquaint themselves with the "counter culture" of teenagers

Editorial Reviews

From the Author
I have recently been made aware of several websites that focus on The Anarchist Cookbook. As the author of the original publication some 30 plus years ago, it is appropriate for me to comment.
The Anarchist Cookbook was written during 1968 and part of 1969 soon after I graduated from high school. At the time, I was 19 years old and the Vietnam War and the so-called "counter culture movement" were at their height. I was involved in the anti-war movement and attended numerous peace rallies and demonstrations. The book, in many respects, was a misguided product of my adolescent anger at the prospect of being drafted and sent to Vietnam to fight in a war that I did not believe in.

I conducted the research for the manuscript on my own, primarily at the New York City Public Library. Most of the contents were gleaned from Military and Special Forces Manuals. I was not member of any radical group of either a left or right wing persuasion.

I submitted the manuscript directly to a number of publishers without the help or advice of an agent. Ultimately, it was accepted by Lyle Stuart Inc. and was published verbatim - without editing - in early 1970. Contrary to what is the normal custom, the copyright for the book was taken out in the name of the publisher rather than the author. I did not appreciate the significance of this at the time and would only come to understand it some years later when I requested that the book be taken out of print.

The central idea to the book was that violence is an acceptable means to bring about political change. I no longer agree with this.

Apparently in recent years, The Anarchist Cookbook has seen a number of 'copy cat' type publications, some with remarkably similar titles (Anarchist Cookbook II, III etc). I am not familiar with these publications and cannot comment upon them. I can say that the original Anarchist Cookbook has not been revised or updated in any way by me since it was first published.

During the years that followed its publication, I went to university, married, became a father and a teacher of adolescents. These developments had a profound moral and spiritual effect on me. I found that I no longer agreed with what I had written earlier and I was becoming increasingly uncomfortable with the ideas that I had put my name to. In 1976 I became a confirmed Anglican Christian and shortly thereafter I wrote to Lyle Stuart Inc. explaining that I no longer held the views that were expressed in the book and requested that The Anarchist Cookbook be taken out of print. The response from the publisher was that the copyright was in his name and therefore such a decision was his to make - not the author's. In the early 1980's, the rights for the book were sold to another publisher. I have had no contact with that publisher (other than to request that the book be taken out of print) and I receive no royalties.

Unfortunately, the book continues to be in print and with the advent of the Internet several websites dealing with it have emerged. I want to state categorically that I am not in agreement with the contents of The Anarchist Cookbook and I would be very pleased (and relieved) to see its publication discontinued. I consider it to be a misguided and potentially dangerous publication which should be taken out of print.

8. Worked at Barnes and Noble for years.
Teenagers were ALWAYS trying to buy this book, mostly just to seem all "out there" and "deep".
If this is all they have on this kid, they're just wasting time...

10. Me too.
I know I have a copy somewhere in the tens-of-thousands of books that I have. Could not immediately put my hands on it though -

It was a product of the sixties.

12. God, I'm doomed...
I had a copy of The Anarchist's Cookbook, stuff by George Hayduke, Victor Santoro (they're into dirty tricks, mostly), Abbie Hoffman (I actually bought my copy of "Steal This Book"!), and almost every subject Loompanics, Unlimited or Paladin Press offered (including how to make your own flamethrower). Fascinating reading, although I was never real keen on the idea of probably blowing myself up while making a batch of homegrown C4.

At least at Gitmo I'll get lemon chicken and two kinds of fruit.

... why didn't he USE THE INTERNET!!

Hello? Grow up! Books are old-skool.

And anyway, who needs the anarchists cookbook when you can go to a public library and get a decent chemistry book and people saying "ah the young man wants to learn something!".

18. Accused by whom, please.
Who accused this boy and the other mentioned in the article under a terrorist "act" for owning this book? How did they find out he owned it? The book seller? A friend? Mom or dad? Were they after him (and the other boy) for something else and this is what they "got" them on?

"You can't judge a book by its cover" but nowadays you can judge a person by the books they own/read?

"Fahrenheit 451" - here we come.

Shall we start signing up now, before it becomes a thought crime, to memorize our favorite tomes before they're all banned and burned?

21. More info from another article...
Teenager 'had bomb-making chemicals under his bed'

Mr Arnold said: "During the search approximately 500g of potassium nitrate were found under the defendant's bed in the room he shares with his younger brother.

"Potassium nitrate is a critical oxidising component of gunpowder. Also recovered was a file on a computer in the defendant's bedroom entitled the Anarchist's Cookbook.

"There are 17 references to potassium nitrate in the 'Improvised Explosives'
section of the document which contains clear instructions on how to make explosives."

The prosecutor alleged 250g of calcium chloride was also found which features in the chapter "How to Make a Plastic Explosive". Videos including the devil's face made in smoke following the 9/11 attacks, beheadings and references to jihad were
also allegedly found at the address.

Edited on Mon Oct-08-07 01:24 PM by Mojorabbit
from that book using potassium nitrate and a catfood can in the eighties. You sat it on the grass and lit it and it smoked. Then I went on to add other chemicals to make the smoke different colors. Totally harmless. I have no idea what happened to that book. I used to own it.
