SEIU won't endorse Democratic candidates
Source: AP

WASHINGTON - None of the Democratic presidential contenders will get the endorsement they've been fervently seeking for the primaries from the Service Employees International Union.

The union said Monday it won't pick a national candidate for the primary elections, underscoring divisions that had been apparent among SEIU supporters of Hillary Rodham Clinton, John Edwards and Barack Obama.

"Any one of these candidates would help create a new American dream for workers and their families," SEIU Secretary Treasurer Anna Burger said.

The international union will not make an endorsement for the primaries, instead allowing its locals make decisions state by state, officials said.

1. Ouch for Edwards. He was banking on this, and this can't
be an endorsement of his viability.

2. They endorsed Dean in 2004, and then withdrew it months later
And they led the drive to bolt the AFL-CIO. They are a mixed blessing.

3. Is that why Edwards was pursuing their endorsement
so hard?

6. There is no reason for SEIU to endorse anyone.
They will endorse whomever is nominated by the Democratic Party. That's smart politics - no use endorsing one of the candidates before th nomination is secure, thereby making an enemy of one of the other candidates if he/she becomes the next president.

7. Absolutely agree. SEIU is a very diverse union
-- too diverse to honestly unite on a candidate.

8. It is so good to see...

More posts on labor in LBN and elsewhere from people that didn't post labor stories before. SEIU tends to represent lower income workers. Let's not pick on them, just as we shouldn't pick on Democrats.

14. This does hurt Edwards
He seemed to have the inside track. An SEIU endorsement would have helped him in New Hampshire, where the SEIU represents most state employees.

15. Can't he still seek the New Hampshire endorsement?
Instead of making a national endorsement, the union will let its locals make decisions state by state. And to ensure that there are no conflicts, once an SEIU local has chosen a candidate, the union's activists from that state will be barred from campaigning in states that have chosen someone else.

"Given the importance of this election, we are encouraging members and leaders to act on their passion for the candidates and get involved on a statewide basis," SEIU President Andy Stern said.

From what I can understand they've left it up to the individual states to endorse whichever candidate they choose.

Edwards' spokesperson appeared to be alright with the decision.

"Despite aggressive efforts by the other campaigns to stop any endorsement by SEIU, we are very pleased by the fact that we will gain endorsements of SEIU locals from across America," Edwards spokesman Eric Schultz said. "It is a victory for the campaign as we now can mobilize the support from SEIU members who enthusiastically support John Edwards' bold plans for real change in America."

16. Yes he can!

I will cross the river to observe the Iowa caucus. I will be wearing Edwards buttons etc... I will need the experience for Nebraska's first ever caucus a month later.
