TSA pulls plug on Orlando's ShoeScanner
Updated 2h 51m ago

By Thomas Frank, USA TODAY
WASHINGTON — A machine that allowed thousands of airline passengers to keep their shoes on at the Orlando airport's security checkpoints is being turned off Wednesday, ending a test that would have removed a major traveling hassle.

The ShoeScanner installed at Orlando International Airport in January is being shut down after the machine failed its latest test at finding explosives hidden in shoes, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) said.

"We're a ways away from having something that's going to work," TSA spokeswoman Ellen Howe said.

The TSA had been testing whether the ShoeScanner could find explosives and let travelers keep their shoes on through checkpoints. Agency chief Kip Hawley has said removing shoes is the biggest security inconvenience for travelers and in August expressed hope that machines could be installed at airports around the USA.

3. I believe they have stuff that works...
Edited on Wed Oct-10-07 02:19 AM by iaviate1
like equipment installed on their aircraft to divert incoming missiles. Although it's not as if this country or our carriers can afford to do that.... not for such cheap fares you see now combined with unchecked executive compensation. Last year, our CEO made more than the ENTIRE major airline.

8. That's called chaff, it's installed on military a/c
Israel has ONE airline. With a tiny percentage of planes compared to US carriers. You cannot credibly compare what Israel does, with a national airline that is closely allied to their defense structure (they use their defense assets to protect the airline), to what the US does. It's apples and oranges.

Sure, US air carriers could install that equipment, but then, would you want it serviced in SINGAPORE? Because that's where a lot of our maintenance happens, nowadays....

And having chaff on airlines (which basically is tin foil tossed off to the side, so the missle follows the foil and not the exhaust of the plane) isn't going to solve the "shoe" problem. It will solve the "jerk with a stinger at the end of the runway" problem--MAYBE--assuming the pilot has enough time and warning to punch that button and jink the plane.

This isn't rocket science. They need to work on that stupid puffer thing, and get it to work. Not x-ray people, shake them down, make them take off their shoes, toss their shit. That intimidation is just ... dumb.

14. That's an excellent question
Israeli security and El Al have a near spotless record.

http://www.usatoday.com/news/sept11/2001/10/01/elal-usat.htm

For Americans considering an end to free and easy flying in the USA, El Al provides a glimpse of what might lie ahead after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

Having lived for decades with bombs and suicide attacks, Israel designed the industry's most impenetrable flight security more than 20 years ago. Officials say it is a stunning success. Despite several wars and endless conflict at home, El Al's sole hijacking was in 1968, before the system began.

God forbid that America should adopt the same system.

5. Now scientists call this disease bromidrosis (that's right!)
And well they should
Even napoleon knows that
But us regular folks
Who might wear a tennis shoe
Or an occasional python boot
Know this exquisite little inconvenience by the name of:
Stink foot

12. Not the workers fault
The workers don't have a say in the matter. It just makes you look like scum cause you don't wash. The people in line will think the same thing and hope they don't set next to ya.

The people who should be punished, they wouldn't get a wiff of it. <shurg>

15. I've got one, that isn't the problem
My Husband has to fly alot. He has been delayed because someone wanted to make a statement in front of the employees who can't do a dang thing about it. ALL the person accomplished, was to make alot of have to stand in line longer.

My son's best friends mother is one of those workers. Not a dang thing she can do. She thinks most of the rules are crazy.

Sorry, it's not a sense of humor thing. IT might enocurage people to act stupid, get in trouble, etc.. for no reasons. The people who made the rules will not be effected by it, they are not even at the airport. They are in DC.
