AOL to cut one-fifth of global work force
Source: Reuters

Time Warner Inc's Internet unit AOL will eliminate 2,000 jobs as part of an ongoing restructuring to better focus on boosting online advertising, according to a memo obtained by Reuters on Monday.

The cuts, which begin on Tuesday, amount to about one-fifth of AOL's global work force and are spread across operations in the United States and in Europe, where the company has sold off its Internet access businesses.

2. And they will be moving to INDIA and CHINA.;, then the CEO can
get a huge pay raise and bonus. Isn't that what all these pigs are doing? Redistributing wealth from the bottom and middle to the top, and enslaving tird world people in horrible working conditions that are just a tad better than what they had, but not enough. Greed became Godly with Ronald Reagan.

6. For once, I disagree.
Never mind how all the Indian H1Bs don't seem to be perceiving any offshoring as exploitation or extortion, the reality is that AOL is a shite company with a shite service that can't keep its dwindling customer base any longer.

The latest turmoil won't help AOL at all.

3. So what is the purpose of AOL?
I rememeber back in the day that AOL would provide internet service with their crappy interface for those that found it too hard to use netscape. So what are they even doing now??

5. Same thing; except not only are computer users just about smart enough to use it on their own,
everyone knows of AOL's horrid service.

Which is about to get worse.

7. AOL to Lay Off 20 Percent of Staff
Source: IDG News Service

It thins down as it continues a transformation into an online, ad-supported business.
Juan Carlos Perez, IDG News Service

AOL LLC will lay off about 2,000 employees, or approximately 20 percent of its staff, as it continues its transformation into an online, ad-supported business and moves further away from its traditional revenue model based on dial-up Internet access fees.

The layoffs will begin on Tuesday and will continue over the coming months, CEO Randy Falco said in a memo sent to employees on Monday and obtained by IDG News Service.

The staff reductions will allow AOL to increase its investments in "high-growth areas of the company," Falco wrote.

"So where is this taking AOL? Put simply, my vision for AOL is to build the largest and most sophisticated global advertising network while we grow the size and engagement of our worldwide audience," the memo reads.

8. They aimed their services at the bottom tier of Internet users...
Without realizing that dial-up Net access would eventually be abandoned. Too bad.

9. When I was down and out, I was able to use their service free for a year or so
Every time I called in to cancel they wouldn't let me, and instead would tell me to take more time to check out their services.
