Why Mexicans are sceptical
"I am pleased he has made this announcement but let's face it, the president wants our votes and we are after all the fastest-growing minority in the United States" -Martin Cruz

<clips>

Hundreds of Mexican immigrants gathered outside the Mexican consulate in Raleigh, North Carolina, in freezing temperatures before dawn.

They were clutching documents, Mexican identity papers and applications for US driving licences, which are due to expire in the coming weeks.

Luis, 45, from Guadalajara showed me his North Carolina driving licence.

"I've been working here, living here and paying taxes for 20 years but this is the only legal American document I possess and it runs out tomorrow!"

5. Bush has just lost the election...
if Dean can cpitalize!

Bushs "Amnesty for illegals" move yesterday just put him on the wrong side of a host of issues

National Security: He is essentially opening the floodgates for terrorists to enter the country

Foreign Policy: This open-door policy is not going over well with traditional conservatives.

Pandering: Bush has abandoned his alleged ideology to pander to Mexican voters.

Economic: ***This could win the election for Dean if he plays it right***
Dean has already made his stance clear about the need to reform NAFTA. This initiative is, in a way, NAFTA II.
NAFTA allowed large corporations to drive down labor costs by relocating their facilities to Mexico where labor was cheap. American laborers saw their wages shrink and their jobs dissapear in the name of Increased Corporate Profits.
However...
Some large corporations, due to the nature of their industry, were not able to relocate facilities to Mexico because their industry was dependent on the land itself. These Industries include farming, meatpacking, ranching, etc...
This new initiative by Bush allows the effective IMPORTING of cheap labor from Mexico legally.
Bush has sold out the American Laborer by allowing wages to be driven into the ground by flooding the market with laborers who are willing to work for minimum wage.

If Dean plays this issue correctly -- the election is in the bag. Once people realize what bush's real agenda is -- they will see how they have been betrayed and he will be done.

4. Well if he wants people from Mexico to do our dirty work...
Then when does he plan to send them into Iraq? This immigration "plan" supposedly gets workers for the jobs Americans don't want to do, right? Our recruitment numbers are down, moral is low, and soldiers aren't able to retire...sounds like a job Americans don't want to me.

Seriously though, the biggest reason Bush came up with this odd plan is because it benefits companies who don't want to pay workers what they are worth. Does anyone really think border state companies who have been paying illegal immigrants below US minimum wage will suddenly pay these workers minimum wage? I don't. But I do think they won't get into nearly as much trouble if they do now.

Just like the ridiculous Medicare reform...doesn't help the people, only the companies.
