Democrats say Rice grossly mismanaged Iraq
Frustration extends to Bush administration as a whole, representatives say

Updated: 8:07 p.m. ET Oct 25, 2007
WASHINGTON - House Democrats on Thursday accused Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice of grossly mismanaging diplomatic efforts in Iraq and concealing information from Congress, putting a visibly frustrated Rice on the defensive.

At a hearing by a congressional watchdog committee, Democratic lawmakers said the State Department under Rice had been too lax with armed security contractors, ignored corruption at the highest levels of the Iraqi government and was sloppy in overseeing construction of the costly new U.S. Embassy in Baghdad.

"I think there was a huge gap between what she said and reality," said Rep. Henry Waxman, chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee.

2. They say they will not call on Rice to resign....
Why the hell not? What do these people have to do to get in any trouble. The Dems are like lenient parents of their criminal children. They really need a spinal implant. I am surprised the Dems can sit up straight since they seem so spineless.

5. Do you think it would make a difference
if they "asked" her to resign?

Do you think she is unpopular enough that the Democrats can do anything much to her at all?

Do you watch politics much?

Waxman claims Maliki cites immunity from corruption investigations. Memo Here:

Yesterday during the hearing Waxman had a heated exchange with Condi Rice over this memo.
She basically would not acknowledge it-"will get back to him" mantra. It reminded me of the
time she did not acknowedge the Report saying bin Ladin determined to fly planes into buildings and
a Senator asked her to pick up the report in front of her and read the Title.

Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice testified at an Oversight Committee hearing focusing on the State Department’s performance on several significant issues relating to the Iraq war, including the impact of the activities of Blackwater USA and corruption within the Iraqi ministries on the prospects of political reconciliation in Iraq. The Committee discussed with the Secretary allegations of wrongdoing associated with the construction of the new U.S. Embassy Compound in Baghdad, as well as other matters under investigation by the Committee.

9. I don't like this meme...
...that legitimizes the war itself by complaining only that it was "mismanaged."

It was a terrible, awful idea, and there was no right way to manage it.

14. True enough
But the dodge for that by Dr. Rice would be that she wasn't Secretary of State when the war started. Okay, she WAS the National Security Advisor, and just as responsible then as she is now for the way things have gone so horribly wrong, but it's enough of a distinction (without any difference) for the GOP to spend a week huffing and puffing about how unfair the Democrats are being.

It does appear, though, that the criticism as it stands hit the mark. For that, I'm grateful. Will there be any follow-through? I've learned not to count on it with this bunch.

19. Don't forget, she was given the job of "Coordinator of Postwar Iraq."
Remember awhile back when she won the tug-of-war over that assignment - against rumsfeld? It was heralded as a major victory for her. She's done as well as kkkarl rove did as coordinator of post-Katrina New Orleans.

Birds of a feather...

21. That's hardly a dodge...

...since national security is supposedly the reason we invaded. Besides, it was precisely her "service" as NSA that was used to justify her appointment at State.

You're probably right, though, about the non sequitur the wingers would use to distract from that point.

15. Do ya think maybe for once the
Dems in the House would come before the cameras and state this? This has been the problem all along. The Dems are looking for a damn handout from the so called liberal media and they have not received any help from them. They need to be more in your face when it comes to getting the message out.....You would suspect the Dems were not ready to take control as they act as if they are still the minority......DAMN!

Shalom,
Ben David

17. Big hairy deal
the (minority) repukes will scream and rant and make them apologize for hurting dear Condi's feelings and the (majority) dems will collapse like fainting goats. When they get up off their backs, they'll apologize to poor Condi. Mission accomplished.

20. They don't have Rumsfeld to kick around anymore.....
I don't care for Condi, but my sense of justice precludes me from laying all the blame on her. She wasn't by herself on this one. Every neocon fron Cheney to the think tanks were involved. This is a red herring and who did she tick off.
