Iran shrugs off harsh new US sanctions
Source: AP

TEHRAN, Iran - The chief of Iran's elite Revolutionary Guards shrugged off harsh new U.S. sanctions that are the most sweeping since 1979, saying "the corps is ready to defend the ideals of the revolution more than ever before."

Washington announced the sanctions Thursday targeting the Revolutionary Guards, which the U.S. accuses of supporting terrorism by backing Shiite militants in Iraq. The sanctions ban U.S. dealings with the extensive network of businesses believed linked to the Guards — and put stepped-up pressure on international banks to cut any ties with those firms.

So far, the official Iranian response has been defiant.

Ahmadinejad and his allies are likely counting on sanctions to rally Iranians against the United States.

"Hard-liners in Tehran were looking forward for the sanctions. It helps them hide their incompetence behind the embargo," said political commentator Saeed Laylaz.

1. Bush and Cheney are crazy, absolutely gone off the edge crazy.
They need to be hospitalized immediately. In the middle of a civil war in Iraq that they started, with Afghanistan crumbling back into the hands of terrorist, with extremist groups waiting in line to attack, they want to start another war.

The sanctions that little rice cakes announced are merely designed to antagonize and inflame Iran. They really, really want another world war and rice cake and our congress played into their crazy schemes.

When are the doctors coming to put them away?

2. Why shouldn't they? The smuggling routes are well established already.
They used to go Iran----> Iraq in the Saddam days. Now it'll just be reversed. No big deal. The same guys will make the money, humping shit over the Zagros.

And it WILL give the regime an excuse for their crumbling infrastructure. See that bridge that has been falling apart since 1988? Well, now it is the fault of the GREAT SHATAN!!!

4. Britain is the only country who said they will follow Bush on the sanctions
Russia said they won't follow the U.S. in the sanctions and China has ignored past sanctions the U.S. has imposed on Iran.

All the other countries have been silent.

The sanctions will have very little, if any, effect on Iran.
