Bush says he'll veto health bill again

By DAVID ESPO, AP Special Correspondent

WASHINGTON - President Bush accused Democratic
lawmakers on Friday of wasting time by passing
legislation to expand children's health coverage,
knowing that he would veto it again. At the same time,
he criticized Congress for failing to approve spending
bills to keep the government running.

Bush said Congress had "set a record they should not
be proud of: October 26 is the latest date in 20 years
that Congress has failed to get a single annual
appropriations bill to the president's desk."

He also complained that Congress had failed to pass a
permanent extension of a moratorium on state and local
taxes on Internet access, and that the Senate had not
yet confirmed Michael Mukasey as attorney general.
Further, he chided Congress for failing to approve
more money for Iraq and Afghanistan.

-snip-

Bush made his comments to reporters in the Roosevelt
Room a day after the House passed new legislation to
expand children's health coverage. Bush vetoed an
earlier version, and Republicans argued the latest bill
was little changed from the earlier measure. The bill
— approved with less than the two-thirds majority
needed to overturn another veto — now goes to the
Senate. The House vote was 265-142.

He'll spend it on his war in Iraq instead.
I hope the Dems make this issue the centerpiece of their campaign next year, tax money all goes to Iraq, nothing for our own kids.

31. you're giving him way too much credit!
a real compassionate conservative, like Bill Clinton, can transform record deficits into record surpluses. only a heartless, brainless creep like Bush can transform a record surplus into record deficits. even most Republicans know Bush isn't compassionate, but I still want to know what makes him remotely conservative?

4. I wish Democrats should show this kind of a spine on Iraq
Democrats on the CHIP bill have been fantastic: standing their ground, holding firm to their convictions and welcoming a fight from the White House. Even when you lose under those circumstances, you can at least hold your head high that you stood by your principles and went down fighting.

I wish we could see that kind of leadership on the Iraq issue.

5. Horrible he is vetoing it but a HUGE political win for Dems
The more people see this administration complaining about cigarette taxes and denying poor children health care coverage the better. Shows their true colors which are pro-big tobacco, and against assisting the poor.

21. it's only a win for the Dems if they take the opportunity to roast him with it
If they turn into fearful appeaser Dems, as has so often been the case on other issues, it might as well not have happened.

10. Again the Dems need to get in front of the
cameras and rail like hell what the pRESIDENT EVIL is doing....Hell, one cannot go before the Sunday talk shows and expect the people to be watching....CNN does not offer any help...One thing one can say about Fox is they have the viewership and they do put forth a message....Usually for the right wing and all negative for the Dems....
I tell you this, once the Dem wins the presidency and hopefully HRC, the first act she should ask for since she will be the head of the democratic party is ask for the removal of harry reid as the majority leader, and call pelosi in for a sit down and explin to her the if, ands and buts, and get this damn thing straightened out.....Hell, the dems cannot run the congress if they act as if they are still in the MINORITY.....DAMN!!!!!

a fine point on morons* hypocracy.

While the repukes try to dazzel the mouthbreathers with bullshit, it appears the dems are pointing out the fact that moron* is a prick.

only thing is, they better push, "moron* hates kids" big time.

19. So the health of our children is now considered a waste of time.
That says it all about these assholes in the republicon party. Yes the whole party because they also vote the same as bush directs them to and thus have the same outlook on the children of our nation as being irrelevant and unimportant. If there was ever a good definition for a piece of shit, I think they not only fill that definition, but far excel in redefining it.

22. To Bush and his yahoo chorus, most kids' health has always been a waste of time.
He also won't renew the heating program that helps poor families, and particularly seniors, even though heating oil is going through the roof this winter.

There is no end to his mendaciousness. Or the American people's gullibility. I just want to retire in five years and move to the country, and just fight small battles in the community in which I live. We have lost the big stuff.

But do not leave the country, because you should be arrested, if there is any justice in the world. The GOPers are as assinine as you so your arrest is hardly imminent in the good old USofA. But by all means deny those little ones and dig a grave for the PUGS in '08. Why should you care, you have already out done the ole man...two terms and the worst pres ever. Why I am sure that daddy is relieved.

We just don't have our priorities straight: Wars come first, poor children last. That is what "pro-life" is all about.

25. That's as far away from being pro life as you can get.
No wonder why I hear the religious part of the religious right is dilligently looking to go outside of the republicon party for a candidate. It is the repukes that don't have their priorities straight just for the record.

29. Go ahead "make our day". Make this idiot VETO! Never let him get by with a "threat" to veto.
Put every one of them on the record. What are you for. What are you willing to fight for? This president has had to veto much too infrequently for such an unpopular president and for such important issues. Make him take stands. If he was painting my congress as a "do nothing congress" I would have everything he hated(and I new was Popular)up there for him to VETO twice a week. Who's running the congressional calendar anyway?

He may get to Veto and he may think he gets to "sign statement" everything that comes across his desk, but I'd make sure everyone and anyone knew everything and all the laws he vetoed and ignored via signing statement.

He should not and cannot be the only one play rough. The time for being polite has come to an end. The administration itself has seen to that. It's friends in the republican congressional members, and I can think of few if any exceptions, have followed suit.

30. When are the Democrats going to step up?
Isn't Bush supposed to be a lame Duck? Why does Congress cull to him? Congress should ignore him completely and pass the bills on up.. When he Vetos get out in the Camera's and say he Veto'd the bill land guess what he's getting it right back until he approves it either way its on his head.

America will understand that. Let the program expire and when kids are showing up on the 6 O'clock news sick and dying cause they have no Health Care maybe America will understand exaclty what happened.
