LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Television and movie screen writers said Thursday they will go on strike for the first time in nearly 20 years in a dispute over royalties.

Four writers told The Associated Press that Writers Guild of America President Patric Verrone made the announcement in a closed-door session, causing loud cheers from the crowd.

"There was a unified feeling in the room. I don't think anyone wants the strike, but people are behind the negotiation committee," writer Dave Garrett said.

1. Man, I remember covering that writers' strike back then.
Met the eccentric and brilliant Harlan Ellison and Walter Koenig on the picket line!!! Sci-fi heaven!!!

They had the best and most clever picket signs (of course! They were writers, after all) - my favorite being "In the Beginning Was the WORD."

2. Damn.
Husband's a grip, I'm trying to be a writer and editor... there goes our mortgage.

Ah well, I'm with the writers on this one.
Hopefully this won't last too long!
Guess we'll just have to wait and see...

3. Classic story of black ink on the books the employer doesn't want to share

We have several friends in the business including Harlan Ellison.

9. There's a threat there's going to be more
reality shows!
Broadcast tee-vee sux ass, and the paid version is just an outrage. If I want to see way worse than TV can do, I'll rot my brain w/ the internets! For the retro-media experience, there's Bush*s unreal State of the Union speech.
