Mike's (Bloomberg) Secret Bid to Run Vs. Spitzer (NY Gov)
Source: NY Post

November 6, 2007 -- A top aide to Mayor Bloomberg has secretly contacted one of the state's best-known Republican strategists about helping Bloomberg run for governor - against Gov. Spitzer or anyone else, The Post has learned.

The aide, Deputy Mayor Kevin Sheekey, told former state GOP Chairman William Powers late last month that Bloomberg was "open" to running for governor in 2010, sources said.

"Sheekey told Powers that he'd like to talk about the governor's race, and they're going to do it," said a source.

"I think it's also fair to say the mayor wasn't happy with the governor's recent attack on him over driver's licenses and, partly because of that, it's also fair to say he's open to running against Eliot," the source added.

If Spitzer can't get his act together, he could potentially be vulnerable to such a campaign. Setting aside his positions on issues, his political tactics have been ham-handed and tin-eared, and he hasn't built up many friends who would stand by him if things get difficult.

1. I still think he's planning a run for President in 2008
... he's just waiting to see who the nominees are.

2. Spitzer could have a problem if he keeps it up.
He was elected to clean up waste, fraud, and abuse. He was not elected to hand out drivers licenses.

3. Spitzer has lost a lot of support, he's been terrible, supporting casinos!
I hope Bloomberg beats him. Spitzer is not to be trusted.

4. interesting
I think running for President would be a waste, especially if it's Clinton or Obama v.s. Giuliani. The areas he would do the best in, the North East and California, would already be firmly dominated by those candidates. I hope he runs for Governor instead, I'd vote for him. He's always been a Democrat anyways.

5. In his first year as mayor, he raised real estate taxes 18%.
I ultimately had to give up my apartment because the taxes were getting so out of control. I'll never forgive him for that.

8. He won't, it turns out. I saw an interview of him on MSNBC with Andrea Mitchell
today--they were talking about his "green" plans for NYC, and he categorically denied he would ever run for Governor. He did NOT categorically deny he would ever run for Prez--he just said "I'm not a candidate". So that pretty much tells you his plans.

9. Spitzer is quite possibly the biggest failure in NY political history
Edited on Tue Nov-06-07 06:46 PM by Magic Rat
considering his expectations and the fact that he came into office with 70+ percent of the vote and an approval rating through the roof.

What a fall he's taken.

Just goes to show you that being a brilliant man and being a brilliant politician are two totally separate things.

11. This driver's license deal and his pro-casino crap..
is not helping him. He can win another term, but he'll have to fight for it in 2010.

13. Jeez, you're a little sunbeam, aren't you.
I love these wholesale condemnations of people months into their terms. We got the "Just Another Failed Presidency?" headline on Bill Clinton by early spring of 1993.
