1. Oh my GOD! This is really alarming. If I understood Biden's fears correctly,
this might cause the "middle" people to join forces with the rebels to take their country back. Thank you for posting this. Wow.

done to prevent the rally she was to lead today. Musharref is making many bad decisions. The people of Pakistan are feeling the crackdown on democracy in their personal lives-- Rising dissatisfaction among the middle class and tribal conflict along the borders is a real recipe for disaster.

9. Wise comment from a newspaper in Frankfurt, Germany
It's burning on all fronts for the United States. The current wave of crises stretches from Turkey, across Irak, Iran, Afghanistan and as far as Pakistan. There is no sign of resolution of the long-standing conflict between Palastine and Israel. Relations with Russia have been tense for months. The superpower, crippled by the addventure in Irak has lost the initiative in foreign ppolicy. With the conflicts in Irak and Afghanistan stuck in a military deadend, political and economic changes are needed. But don't expect that from George W. Bush since change would mean admitting his own defeat.

(APA/dpa)

hmmmm....
Do I have the gist of the recent Pakistan history right here? Musharef has said he would take off his uniform once his (illegal under Pakistan rules?) "presidency" was ruled ok by the court. But it had looked like the court would not rule in his favor so he sacked some of the judges and installed new ones more friendly to him. Then when lawyers objected he declared martial law and started arresting anyone who opposed him, including Bhutto and folks running in the opposition party for elections which he says will occur in February. Is that about it?

Why is it we are still referring to Pakistan as a democracy?

12. The elections were going were supposed to take place in January. Then Musharraf
said it might take up to a year. I think the U.S. balked so now he's saying February - a month later than originally promised.

Wonder if he'll keep coming up with excuses when the date arrives, like Bush does with Iraq.

11. Now they have Benazir Bhutto's home surrounded by 6000 troops...
they've deliberately flooded the square where today's protest was to happen, she says that 5000 of her PPP workers have been detained across the country, she has made an attempt to sneak out and was stopped "for her own protection", and all highways between Punjab and North West Frontier Province have been blocked.

200 Security Personnel Surrender to Militants in Pak
http://www.zeenews.com/articles.asp?aid=406375&sid=WOR&ssid=&news=200%20security%20personnel%20surrender%20to%20militants%20in%20Pak

Islamabad, Nov 09: Two hundred paramilitary personnel have surrendered to pro-Taliban militants in the troubled Swat valley, in a major embarrassment to Pakistan government which has been pushed on the backfoot in its operation to root out extremists from the northwestern tribal areas.

The 200 men of the Frontier Corps surrendered to militants led by radical cleric Maulana Fazlullah last night after their camp in the Matta area was surrounded by the extremists who are demanding imposition of strict islamic law or Shariat and have strengthened their hold on the region by driving out most security forces.

The security personnel handed over their weapons to the militants and did not put up any resistance, Dawn News channel reported.

There was no official word on the surrender, but a militant spokesman said the personnel were being taken to Imamdheri, the stronghold of Fazlullah, known as "Mullah Radio" for his sermons broadcast from an illegal FM station.

There are almost no security forces in upper Swat, where most security posts and police stations are now held by the militants.

was his agreement with the U.S. in return for the $billions. At least they know where THOSE billions went.

17. Bhutto under house detention
Source: The Seattle Times

Pakistani police backed by armored vehicles detained opposition leader Benazir Bhutto at her Islamabad residence today and reportedly rounded up 5,000 of her supporters to block a planned mass protest against emergency rule, officials said.

Authorities were adamant that Bhutto's planned rally in nearby Rawalpindi would not go ahead. Mass gatherings are banned under emergency powers that President Gen. Pervez Musharraf declared last weekend. Mayor Javed Akhlas also said there was a "credible report" of six or seven suicide bombers in the city.

(snip)

Bhutto was not formally under house arrest, Information Minister Tariq Azim said. But "we will not allow any leader to carry out any rally," he said

20. bhutto under lock and key. call it house arrest. call it keeping her safe. call it what they want.
she is not free to freely express her opposition to musharaff ... that is called repression. she is being chained (with actual chains or not but in this case the chains are the armored vehicle backing the Pakistani police who are preventing her from leaving her house... and in the meantime, there are claims of credible suicide bombers in the city which equal bush's cry of terror, terror, terror anytime he wants to get his way, get the focus off of his back ... whatever.

Pakistan, Musharaff, Bhutto, the Lawyers, the armored tanks, the fear planting, and the actual jackbooting of any who dare to protest is an old page of history and one we will witness here whenever bush and his homeland security team want to turn their guns on us! America Beware!

US Urges Release of Bhutto

Friday November 9, 2007 2:31 PM

By DEB RIECHMANN and LOLITA C. BALDOR

Associated Press Writers

CRAWFORD, Texas (AP) - The United States urged
Pakistan to end the house arrest of opposition
leader Benazir Bhutto Friday as Defense Secretary
Robert Gates voiced concern that the political
turmoil there will undermine the Pakistani army's
fight against terrorism.

“We remain concerned about the continued state
of emergency and curtailment of basic freedoms,
and urge Pakistani authorities to quickly return to
constitutional order and democratic norms,” Gordon
Johndroe, a spokesman for the National Security
Council said in a statement.

“Former Prime Minister Bhutto and other political
party members must be permitted freedom of
movement and all protesters released,” said the
statement by Johndroe, who accompanied
President Bush to the president's Texas ranch for
the weekend.

The administration said it is important for
Pakistan's future that moderate political forces
be able to work together to put Pakistan back on
a path to democracy.
