A shortage of cocaine - where?
Source: Houston Chronicle

America's top two drug fighters said anti-narcotics programs in Latin America are causing a cocaine shortage in Houston and 36 other U.S. cities — but police said it doesn't jibe with what they're seeing in the streets.

With White House drug czar John Walters and Drug Enforcement Administration chief Karen Tandy both in Bogota, Colombia, the administration put out a unified message Thursday: It is tougher to get cocaine in many American cities, and the prices are going up.

Armed with the results of a sample involving thousands of purchases made by undercover DEA agents and their informants during the first seven months of the year, Walters said the price of a pure gram of cocaine now stands at about $137 — up 44 percent since January.

He portrayed the spike in cost as progress, because a key drug-war goal is to squeeze supply and drive up prices to discourage people from using cocaine.

1. Of Course, Eliminating The Need for Oblivion Is Too Difficult
involving the elimination of Bush, Cheney, the Supreme Traitors and minions and the fundie churches in toto. Plus universal health care, steep penalties on white collar crime, progressive taxation of all income, and all the accoutremonts of a modern western democracy....

We'd have to undo 30 years of GOP misrule!

Pass the drugs, please....

5. Pfffft........
Cocaine is readily available around here, in rock and in powder
form. It is cheaper now. An '8 ball' was $250 back in the late
1980s, now the same '8 ball' is $160.
It is just impossible to find good 'herb', being as it is soooo
much more dangerous than cocaine. :eyes:
Prices on marijuana have actually seen a small creep down in price
in the same time frame but not the big drop that cocaine suffered.
Marijuana was running around $1000 a pound, now it is $850.

Fucking idiots. The only thing this "key goal" will accomplish is MORE crime to get the money to afford the more expensive coke.

13. Not here! Crack seizures are way up, due to the war on "ice" (meth).
http://www.honoluluadvertiser.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=2007711030360

The amount of crack cocaine seized in Hawai'i this year has far surpassed totals for the previous three years, a trend law officials attribute to heavy enforcement pressure on crystal methamphetamine operations, crack's relatively low cost and other factors....

"We have been noticing the resurgence of both powder cocaine and crack cocaine to our Islands. Virtually all of these drug-trafficking groups who were bringing in crystal meth are also either now bringing in both ice and coke, or have switched over now to bringing in only cocaine," said U.S. attorney Ed Kubo.

"This trend is due to several factors, the first being our efforts against 'ice' are aggressive and continue to be so successful that there is a concern by criminals about dealing in ice and getting long prison sentences."

Another factor is an "ice" shortage, Kubo said. "Dealers are aware that many users of ice will also be willing to use cocaine when there is a shortage of ice," he said.

So on the mainland, the situation is probably reversed: anyone faced with an actual (not propagandized) shortage of coke will simply turn to meth. :eyes:
