College Paper Reveals: Hillary's Campaign Planted Question at Forum
Source: Associated Press

DES MOINES -- An aide for Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton gave a Grinnell College student a question to ask the Democratic presidential candidate during a forum this week in central Iowa.

That the question had been planted by the campaign was not mentioned at the event.

"This is not standard policy and will not be repeated again," the campaign said in a statement issued Friday night. Clinton herself did not know when she called on the student that the question had been suggested by one of her staff, the campaign said.

"The senator had no idea," Clinton spokesman Mo Elleithee told The Associated Press.

Some of the hijinks staffers pull in order to "help" their candidate are unbelievable.

7. To expect her to keep tabs on hundreds of eager campaigners
is a bit much. People get carried away. How she responds to it will be the real test.

10. Clinton campaign staff sure didn't have a good week

Not so the reference to Hillary Clinton and the tip. As soon as that story aired in the 5 o'clock hour Eastern Time, it was picked up by a number of political blogs. And the Clinton campaign immediately contacted news organizations to tell its side of the story. Clinton spokesman Phil Singer wrote to NPR in an e-mail: "The campaign spent $157 and left a $100 tip at the Maid-Rite Restaurant. Wish you had checked in with us beforehand."

Esterday said "nobody got tipped that day," and NPR should have checked with the Clinton campaign before the story aired to see if any tip was left and how it was done. We regret that this was not done. On Thursday, Esterday was sticking by her story.

"Why would I lie about not getting a tip?" she told NPR. She also maintained that her co-workers at the restaurant had not received tips.

A Clinton campaign staffer called on Esterday at the restaurant Thursday after the story aired. The staff member apologized to her and gave her a $20 bill, according to Esterday. The Clinton campaign confirmed that visit. The campaign also produced photocopies of receipts showing $157.46 was paid to Maid-Rite on a VISA card on Oct. 8 for meals consumed by the candidate's entourage. The tip was supposed to have been paid in cash, and the campaign insisted such a payment was made but has declined to make available a staff member who was present at Maid-Rite and left tip money.

Ooops! They need to get their act together. But on the above story I agree with the waitress - the media is nuts! It's like 2000 and 2004 redux with them doing their best to report all the trivial crap on the Dem candidates. I will never forgive them for how they aided and abetted all the crap the RW fed them about Gore and Kerry!

14. This is such garbage
I had someone start quizzing me at my candidate's appearance in a previous election.

I suggested, "Well, why don't you ask him about his plan for ..... during the question and answer."

Next thing, I knew my candidate was being attacked because questions were being planted in the audience.

First of all, the person didn't have to ask the question. Secondly, it is perfectly normal for a campaign worker to suggest that someone ask a question when the worker is talking with an interested person in the audience.

I'll just betcha it wasn't anything like Bush has been caught doing: "Mr. President, we love you. When are you going to come back and see us again?"

Just be aware Repugnants are following our Democratic candidates around looking for opportunities to stir up an embarassment.

And yes, it is the rethug FEMA. I want nothing to do with this political arm of bushco.

18. Tell me again how liberal she really is.
It's remotely possible that this was an isolated incident of overzealousness on the part of a campaign staffer, but I'm unlikely ever to believe that. Hillary seems the most eager of all Dem candidates to compromise on any ideal that might be termed "liberal." Emulating the Potemkin presidency, even accidentally, doesn't bode well for the future President Clinton.

And this happens right on the heals of that FEMA debacle.

22. Given her hint that she may retain any of the ILLEGAL powers this administration has assumed...
...not very much.

What she suggested in that regard is, itself, illegal - presidents don't get to pick their own powers.

23. I have been around a campaign or two
As noted upthread the idea that local workers/volunteers
did this independently of the national campaign staff does
not pass the smell test. And if she (Hillary) did that @ Grinnell
it is very likely it has been done other places too.
