Congressman vs. Sheriff
Source: Laredo Morning Times

Saying he will defend his district against anybody trying to portray it as a "war zone," U.S. Rep. Henry Cuellar defended Thursday the statements he made during a heated exchange with Webb County Sheriff Rick Flores on national television."He cannot expect to attack me, to attack my city that I care so much about, and portray it as a war zone," Cuellar said during a videoconference Friday.

"(People) are going to think Laredo is a bad place to come to."

The exchange occurred Thursday during a taped interview on CNN's nightly news show featuring Glenn Beck.

Cuellar said he was invited to the show to talk about Laredo's missing Americans, but was instead asked questions about federal spending and how much money had been appropriated to fight crime along the Texas-Mexico border.

1. I once lived in Laredo. Never again.
That place is the absolute worst city in the entire United States. I lived there for several years before finally pulling up roots, abandoning my job, and taking the family north. There is a hatefulness there that is simply awful.
Here's one of the things I still have from that time in my life.

Ciudad de Tierra

You know it is better elsewhere, and that’s unsettling.
Because your world has gotten so small it seems
Earth Town is all there is,
Earth Town with its
Earth brown shades, with its
Washed out old men
Taking one careful step
After another, ever watchful,
Forever guarding tired carts overflowing with dusty cardboard and junkman dreams.

It's a place where the black butterfly never rests,
Unless it’s blown by dusty winds through the skinny rails of black burglar bars and ends up pressed
Against walls of adobe and dust.
It never rests.

I have déjà vu blackouts and I feel this place
is a desert cactus stuck to my skin
scratching my
heart
I have been-will be-am here
Forever.

Blood is sluggish passionate lava on streets named
Montezuma, Columbus, Reagan, and Santa Maria
The people walk on mongrel roads and each has
Sensuous eyes, leaden eyes, molten eyes.
And they walk slowly, and have short lives,

And they never notice the cactus clinging tightly
to the unforgiving soil or the dry black
butterfly impaled upon its
thorns.

7. Hey, Thanks for the feedback
I've been lurking for quite a while, but I thought it was about time to join in the discussions. Previously I had been on SmirkingChimp for years, but the crowd there has become very strange and the format isn't nearly as friendly.

DU has always been warm in its welcomes, and I look forward to the interaction. We have some really great writers here.

2. Glen Beck is an idiot. I listened to him only a few times and he doesn't make sense. His comments
betray a comedic entertainer (angry white american) and not an investigative reporter. This should be a warning to any Democrat wanting to go on such shows as Lou Dobbs (with his fabricated, skewed and cherry picked facts) and Shawn Hannity. These guys just make inflammatory comments and appeal to the angry white american population.

10. Beck is a rodeo clown, not a reporter
He even admits such. Like Hannity, or O'Reilley, Beck's show is just an opinion piece... his. No one should mistake it for a news program.

12. Doesn't make sense?
Beck put Cuellar in his place for his condescending remarks toward a Sheriff who is trying to protecting his citizens! Makes allot of sense trying to close our borders it should to you also!

6. Kidnappings
Edited on Sat Nov-10-07 04:05 PM by Gman
they happen along the border randomly. Usually they're done quietly as the families, upon the demand of the kidnappers, don't want authorities involved. There are several, maybe quite a few Americans that have been kidnapped either when they were across the border or kidnapped on this side then taken across the border.

That's why I haven't been to Mexico in going on 10 years now. I have to work in the lower Rio Grande Valley at times but I'm always looking over my shoulder, just in case.

11. Cuellar forgot who he works for!
I guess Cuellar forgot who he works for thought he worked for the people in his district? Cuellar
didn't even name the Sheriff by his name! Called him Mr. Sheriff so condescending . I guess it is because Cellar's Brother is running against the Sheriff next election?
