Oil pipeline set ablaze by bomb in Iraq
Source: Xinhua China

TIKRIT, Iraq, Nov. 10 (Xinhua) -- Iraqi insurgents blew up a roadside bomb under an oil pipeline in the central province of Salahudin on Saturday, setting up a huge fire, a provincial police source said.

The pipeline, which carries oil from the northern oil fields of Kirkuk to Beiji refinery, went into flames before midday in the Fatha area near the town of Beiji, 200 km north of Baghdad, the source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.

Fire engines rushed to scene to put out the fire and prevented an escalation of the damage.

Thick black smoke billowed high into the sky, as intense heat from the fire prevented fire fighters from approaching the blaze, he said.

Hard to understand why oil companies are signing deals with the Kurds when it seems they can't keep oil flowing for more than three days without some explosion interrupting operations.

2. This would have been for internal consumption.
It's just another resistance tactic. Although let's face it, we can't absolutely rule out that the Chinese in Iraq were taking gasoline and benzene from the Americans. Hell, maybe the Russians did it to make sure the Chinese over-tax their Sudanese oil supplies, thereby causing them to dip further into the spot market--causing oil prices to rise even further for Americans and throwing more oil revenue in the direction of Chavez and Putin. You never know ... it all makes sense, in that perspective.

This is an instance of that time-honored practice of denying the populace gasoline and heating oil in the name of the greater good, which is to say, in the interests of those doing the bombing or resisting. Now, whether it's people-honored depends on (a) who's denying necessities to the populace as a kind of ritual humiliation of the government and collective punishment for not doing one's resistantly duties and killing those that the resistance deems traitors and (b) who's in a position to award or deny honor to the resistance. Or maybe the resistance just doesn't like the kind of CDs the electricity is used for. Hard to know, apparently.

Sometimes it's judged a good and just practice, sometimes it's a heinous practice. Oft done, only sometimes decried.

Of course, by denying the production of petroleum refining, they also deny monies to the corrupt politicians and tribal leaders, as well as thiefs and competitors-at-resistance, so I guess we can consider the entire Iraqi population as collateral (in more than one sense), and consider infrastructure that provides oil for electricity generation and gasoline for ambulances and other transportation needs a valid target.

"Resistance" is to be read in scare quotes in this post, natch'.

8. oil pipeline watch website show attacks are down from 2005 high
37 in 2003
148 in 2004
199 in 2005
101 in 2006
75 in 2007

http://www.iags.org/iraqpipelinewatch.htm
attacks seemed to have dropped of greatly since the end of July it seems the site hasn't even been updating them or,
attacks were non existent until lately

I'm sure the oil infrastructure that was in disrepair and outright ignored by Saddam in his last ten years is pumping at a capacity greater then those last oil embargo years.
There are people who would like to see the Iraqi supply being stopped. If it is stopped, world supply drops and prices are kept high by the demand.
let the Iraqi's open those spigots and flood the market I say

6. This will make Bush's oil buddies happy!
They don't want that oil on the market.

That's the main reason we invaded Iraq - sit on the oil and drive up prices.

MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!
