House Democrats Target Sex Predators In Internet Safety Package
Source: Associated Press

WASHINGTON - The House is taking on people who use the Internet to prey on children, working through bills that would make it easier to monitor and prosecute cyber crimes against juveniles and to educate children about online dangers.

"We need to think of this as a war," said Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, D-Fla., sponsor of one of a half-dozen sex predator, child pornography and Internet safety bills heading for passage Wednesday. The bills were put together by Democratic majority but enjoyed wide bipartisan support.

Her bill would approve spending $1 billion over the next eight years to combat online child exploitation. It would create a Justice Department office to coordinate prosecution efforts; increases money for a program that helps state and local law enforcement; and provides more dollars to hire agents and improve forensic lab capabilities dedicated to child exploitation cases. It passed 415-2.

She said law enforcement has identified nearly 500,000 individuals trafficking in child pornography over the Internet, but because of a lack of resources, only about 2 percent are under investigation.

1. Oh boy! Another "war" thought up by "Wrong Way Wasserman"
I'm so glad she's plugged in to the reasons the democrats were voted into the majority. This must be one of the "top priorities" she decided to unilaterally attribute to the country's voters, like she tried to do with Ed Schultz last Thursday.

9. Anyone familiar with this subject should understand that it is not a low priority--
Comcast alone is making $500 million+ every year from porn ---

Think about that ---

Adult and child porn are crossing on the internet ---

12. The internet has been a fountain of porn since it got started.
Edited on Wed Nov-14-07 09:43 PM by bemildred
The bulletin board systems were the same before that. So will any uncensored information source prove to be. Humans like smut, a lot of them anyway. I'm not willing to put up with censorship by self-appointed "moralists" in some futile attempt to stomp that out.

a lot of humans like gold . .. that doesn't mean that anyone is going to give it to them.

Pornography depends on females with few options ---

we need to change that ---

20. Well yeah, but that doesn't mean you have to censor the internet.
I'm all for giving women ways to survive and prosper without selling their bodies, men too for that matter, but that has diddly squat to do with censorship of the internet, or any other kind of government meddling with the content of the internet.

I don't know very much about pornography, but I'm willing to learn. Especially if I had a really experienced sort of teacher to help me find my way.

29. Good! First, educate yourself about the fact that a lot of porn ISN'T exploitive of women.
A huge amount of porn online is amateur, consenting adults.

18. And there we go, sliding right down that slippery slope.
Congratulations, you just conflated the indefensible production of child pornography with the first amendment protected right of adults to view other adults engaged in sexual activity.

These hideous bills establish police monitoring facilities for internet activity, just like they have in totalitarian China and other fascist dictatorships. Oh yes, but of course it is 'to protect the children'. They will always use some palatible cover as they tighten the noose around our necks. And there will always be the gullible fools who fall for their bullshit.

Go after the folks producing child porn. They are the ones who are committing a real crime.

Please elaborate and explain what you mean by this, providing examples. Because I think you're spreading hysterical FUD to further an anti-ADULT-porn agenda.
