Thanksgiving dinner will cost more this year
Source: Newark Advocate

Thanks to increasing energy costs and world food demands, Thanksgiving dinner is going to cost a little more than in 2006.

Food prices this year are up across the board. What we've seen happen in 2007 is different from previous years.

This year we're seeing food prices increase at a rate of 4.4 percent, which is well above the 10-year average of 2.6 percent. In general, food price inflation has been lower than the rest of inflation, but this year that has changed.

<snip>

Dairy prices are up 15 percent from last year, and that's fairly noticeable because a lot of people buy milk every week. Eggs are up 45 percent.

<snip>

Energy costs aren't the only factors contributing to the increase in food costs. A worldwide wheat shortage has contributed to the high cost of wheat-based foods.

1. I have been shocked at food prices!
Then I get angry because there's not a whole lot I can do about it. We try to be frugal but it still costs a fortune at the grocery store. Just for staples! I want to scream at someone that it seems no one cares about this. Normal people are having trouble buying food.

This bothers me more than the price of oil. But when you add heating oil and food costs (two items excluded) back into the inflation numbers we must be way over the top!

2. Here's what you need to do
Turn on CNBC and listen to them. They will tell you how wonderful things are and that there is no inflation or anything else to worry about. Then you can be happy and finally begin to appreciate the increase in your chocolate rations from 8 grams to 6. ;-)

5. I am not buying a turkey this year
a free-range one would probably cost about $50.00 these days. Forget it!

There will be no big "Thanksgiving" around here.

9. Of course those 'free range' turkeys cost more....
Edited on Thu Nov-15-07 11:43 AM by AnneD
it takes a lot of fuel for those turkeys to drive around the range in their hummers;)

8. something's fishy with the figures
I've seen a 30 percent jump in too many items to believe the 4.4 figure.

14. Yep. The rise in prices has really been dramatic over the past year
I'd guess at least a 30% increase in most of the items that I purchase regularly. I do by a lot of fresh produce and organic items, and I'm guessing that the mass produced stuff hasn't risen quite as sharply...but I can't be sure of that. Corn is in nearly everything that's pre-packaged, and the ethanol scam has made corn prices go up significantly this year.

15. I read it here on DU...
"We've decided that since the oil is running out that we're going to burn the last two inches of Midwestern topsoil in our gas tanks."

Truer words were never spoken.

10. Not Much To Be Thankful For
The war drones on...many can't afford to feed their vehicles,feed their families....the threat of high heating bills has many wondering what they will do...elderly already squeezed by the non ending question of food or meds find themselves in a sad state most of the time. But there is always more for war,our grand leaders worry about everything and everyplace but right here. If you know someone who has an empty larder try to give them a little plate of "something"--whatever you are having. Most are not fussy what it is to keep the tummy quiet. If you can't help see if there is a charity in town that does a Thanksgiving meal for those who can't do for themselves. It really is up to us.

13. We're hosting for 20--it's big bucks this year.
Most of the family's coming Wednesday afternoon and staying through Friday lunchtime. All that food is costing us a bundle. Good thing I've been stocking up for awhile, but still.

We're settling for an Amish turkey this year, not organic like usual. I'm using a pie recipe that uses fewer pecans (have you seen the pecan prices?!). We put up our own apple pie filling, so that pie's okay, but the other stuff is really adding up. We're simplfying the menu a lot, which helps, but then the other meals are adding up to a lot. *sigh*

18. Mom was just yesterday complaining about not having any sales on turkey around...
Kind of what I thought. Used to be they could drop the price of turkey as a loss leader to get people to buy in other Thanksgiving stuff. Sounds like grocery chains aren't able to afford to do that this year.

23. How could it not? Diesel is $3.60 here.
The food doesn't teleport itself onto the supermarket shelves.

I hope this isn't the winter of the trifecta: high heating costs, high food prices, low food pantry donations.

Very scary.
