Judge says debate over hemp might be better handled by Congress
Source: AP

BISMARCK, N.D.

The federal judge handling a farmer lawsuit against the U.S. government over the right to grow industrial hemp says the matter might be better handled by Congress than the courts.

"Isn't the best remedy to amend the definition of industrial hemp under the (federal) Controlled Substances Act?" Judge Dan Hovland asked, during a court hearing on the issue Wednesday. "To me, it seems like the easiest solution."

North Dakota farmers Wayne Hauge and Dave Monson, who also is a state legislator, want Hovland to bar the federal government from prosecuting them for growing industrial hemp under state regulations approved last year.

<snip>

"Really, North Dakota is a test case," he said. "If we succeed, we'll be able to see if farmers can grow the crop. If we fail, it puts more pressure on Congress to act."

2. It's like a game of ping pong.
Or perhaps hot-potato would be more accurate.

3. But, but, but, I might smoke my shirts, or drink my shampoo, or blah blah blah
When will this nightmare ever end?

I've purchased Hemp oil for cooking and believe you me it had no mind altering effect except for the fact it tasted good in my food. I've used ground Hemp seeds in cookie recipes, again no mind altering effects except for the goodness of delicious cookies.

I've bought Hemp fabric and made a vest out of it. Nope no mind altering effects. Although I haven't tried smoking it.
The fabric is so soft. The textile is woven where there is a different texture to each side.

I've also purchased Hemp shampoo. Again no mind altering effects. But sure makes my hair feel good. I haven't ever tried to drink it.

The DEA is once again overstepping the boundaries of sanity. For them to claim that it contains trace amounts of THC is so unrealistic only the most ignorant people would ever attempt to get high from Hemp is ludicrous.

I think the judge should go ahead and make a ruling. He has the authority to do so, maybe just maybe other states would follow suit. There is no sane reason to continue this ban on a plant.

Hemp could actually help out in the global climatic crisis.

I cast the first rec, hopefully there will be four more like minded DUers to help get this to the greatest.

8. You're trying to high off your shampoo, aren't you? Admit it!!!1!
Just kidding, of course.

I'm honestly surprised that you were able to purchase hemp seeds legally. The hemp ban is ridiculous and based on superstition.

4. ...solving the climate crisis...
You got a point all the paper that could be made as well as other things from hemp that could 'save our rain forests' among other things, just something to think about. I highly agree that hemp in no way should be considered a controlled substance. If someone think that they are getting high from smoking hemp they are smoking something else to.

5. It is an excellent plant
for so many things. It would be something that people could grow in many places and take care of their own needs, while reducing their dependancy on destructive industries. It is a plant that we can use to help ourselves and the Earth. See why the oil barrons don't want us to have it?
