Dungeness crab season begins despite oil spill worries
Source: AP

SAN FRANCISCO - The region's Dungeness crab season opened as scheduled Thursday amid health concerns by local fisherman who wanted an all-out fishing ban as clean-up efforts continued on last week's oil spill.

Despite the request to suspend all commercial and sport fishing for at least 21/2 weeks, the state announced Wednesday that only San Francisco Bay and three miles of Pacific coast from Point Reyes down to San Mateo County would be closed. That left most of the commercial Dungeness crab fishery open, prompting fears that even one contaminated crustacean could hurt the entire market.

"This is an absolute disaster," said Larry Collins, who heads the San Francisco Crab Boat Owners Association. "We're all stunned. It's absolutely irresponsible."

Crabs. Another item to put on the do not eat list.

1. They're already on my do-not-eat list
due to allergy. (But, damn, I loved those big bugs before I started swelling up!)

I think it's amazing that it's the crab fishing industry that wants the season postponed. When the people who stand to lose money from something like this are advocating it, you know it's goddamn serious. It is stunning.

3. It's enlightened self interest
It is better to lose 2 1/2 weeks, than to lose the entire season.

If even one crab boat ignores the ban in the SF area, and a single contaminated crab gets to the market, the entire season will be a loss after going through the expense of catching and shipping the animals across the US.

8. It's all about the crabbers in the Pacific Northwest.
The locals are out cleaning up the Bay while the fucks from Oregon and Wshington are throwing tantrums.

What those bastards do is come scoop up the Dungeness and then go back to their filthy lairs.

This is going to be disastrous.

9. And all that those elitist on the hilltops in Cali do is...
Whine...
Dinoboy in Montana...
You wont find those tide swings until you are well north of Vancouver Island and even then, they tend to top out at 15' or so. Locally, and I mean locally, tides swing 7' or so.
The Dungeness crab comes no where near shore, ever, unless its in a boat.
Also, crabs dont so much walk as swim along in the currents.

To TominTib...there is only one boat that came down for the season out of Oregon, the rest are from Del Norte/Crescent City. The "filthy lair" that is still in Cali I think....

Cant say I like you saying they (NW boats) should go back to their filthy lairs...like they are poaching your precious resource or something, quite elitist of you really.
I suppose thats why Oregonians view the Californians the way they do.
That "me" mentality, yuck.

This oil spill will have zero effect on the fishery at sea, as a surfer/tuna fisherman and a crabber, this I know. The Mendocino low will keep any oil at sea close to shore.
The bay is another matter and as polluted as it is, I doubt it makes much difference.

12. I did not say
that the spill was a good thing, just to point out that putting 'filthy lair' and painting as poachers in a post about hard working people.
Which are my neighbors and friends.

Sorry.

7. It's all over the local news. I am not entirely sure the locals will be eating them.
I don't know where else they are sold, but people from here have been well-warned.
