Panavision to Shut Down for Two Weeks (Strike Related)
Source: Below the Line

We’ve just received a tip that Panavision, one of the largest camera gear supply houses in all of Hollywood is, as our source tells it “shutting down” from December 17 through January 2nd — a tally which includes 13 work days.

“Many people there will have one or two unpaid weeks during the holidays,” our source tells us. “From the strike.”

The mighty are already wobbling. One wonders what will happen if they all get back to “work” after the new year, and the strike is still raging

2. And the actors.
I don't know how much typical writers get, but typical actors - wow.

3. I think the figure I heard was that the writers make around $300,000 per year.
Not sure if that's just SENIOR writers or what.

I'm guessing that the guys who wrote for Stella and Freakshow didn't make as much money as the ones who wrote for Colbert, Stewart and David Letterman.

5. That's bullshit.
SOME writers make that much, some more, and some make much, much less.

My best friend writes for The Tonight Show and I know those guys make a shitload of money, but most have been with Jay Leno since he took over and get increases in salary based on how long they have been there.

Many writers have long breaks between jobs and don't come close to making 300k per year.

4. I have a friend who is actually a "typical actor". She is doing pretty
well now with some filmed advertizing (no residuals, usually) work once or twice a month (even gets SPEAKING roles in ads occasionally!!!!), and some unpaid stage work that keeps her skills up. I bet she made at LEAST $12k last year. Maybe even $15k.

THAT'S "typical".

7. Eh. She's not typical. She's working.
What is the number? 95% of SAG unemployed at any given moment? Or is that just the Equity number?

People always told me to be nice and kind to the actors because they're delicate. But I couldn't survive the levels of rejection they get daily.

6. "Typical actors" get scale.
You're speaking of one or two stars who drive box office and provide work to everyone. Have you ever sat in your seat when the credits roll? I do. Every time. Because every name is a separate struggle to organize, to join, to be allowed to work and credited for it. And everyone of those jobs is provided when a STAR signs on the dotted line. But you think someone like George Clooney shouldn't be making a large amount of money?

The most brilliant script in the world will sit in a box if no star wants to do it. Or no director. Because, in fact, film is a director's medium. Writers are kleenex in the film world. Which is another reason why it's the writers who have been forced to strike. Because they don't get no respect.
