Antiwar 'Olympian' Covers Wild Antiwar Protests Close to Home, Puts Names of Arrested on Front Page
Source: Editor and Publisher

The Olympian in Olympia, Wash., which has been a strong critic of the Iraq war on its editorial page, took a hard line with anti-war protesters who have resorted to violence in opposing use of a local port to ship military equipment.

In Thursday's editions, the paper printed the names of all 58 arrested protesters on Page One, while the editorial page objected to the protester's approach that led to the arrests.

"There is a curiosity among people of who the protesters are," Managing Editor Jerry Wakefield said about the front-page name list. "This is the most that have been arrested here in protests in recent memory." He said there was little discussion about publicizing the names so prominently: "Not a great deal of debate."

1. I just talked to some people from the protests. (Here at Evergreen in Olympia)
They said that there were cops, then also these guys in Black Humvees with black masks. The protesters asked for their badge numbers, they were told they had none. Apparently the black hooded men, which were holding a line against the protest, were military guys. Furthermore, you see a lot of crazy military helicopter action over the town, so its certainly an interesting scene.

The mayor has been supportive, but is against them blocking roads or that kind of thing.

3. The army of the US is arresting American citizens for protesting?
Why would an ARMY humvee be BLACK?

4. I didn't get details. I asked the protester if he was sure that the humvees were military, and not..
...blackwater, and he said "oh yeah, they're military". He said that the police were keeping separate from them, and the protesters were too. I didn't hear that the the men in black were arresting the protesters, only that they were there, in their own area.

2. Peaceful protest or Public Accounting - for both sides
If a protest breaks down into non-peaceful protest it runs counter to the protesters goal. However, humanity being what it is this does happen and we have all seen that BOTH sides of the line can be at fault. When protest breaks down a full PUBLIC accounting must be made for the sake of both the public safety and the rights of the people to protest.
