Ex-president to utilize wind at Walker's Point
Source: Portland Press Herald

KENNEBUNKPORT — Walker's Point is a little greener these days.

Last week, a 33-foot-tall windmill was installed to generate electricity for the oceanfront home of former President George H.W. Bush and his wife, Barbara.

The Bushes decided to buy and install a windmill after being approached by Southwest Windpower, a nationwide company that manufactures wind turbines, said Jim Appleby, personal aide to the former president.

...

Bruce MacDonald, a member of Gov. John Baldacci's wind power task force, said increased visibility for small windmills is positive.

The task force is working to encourage wind turbines at schools to increase their visibility among younger generations, said MacDonald, a state legislator from Boothbay.

3. All new wind mills are bird proof now, because their turbines move very slowly. (nt)

5. I can't imagine a windmill on Walker's Point.
The Maine coast is a real treasure and the thought of a windmill destroying the natural beauty of the rocky coast pains me. I'm all for alternative energy, but there's a place for everything. They could put solar panels on the roof or do something . . . anything . . . to preserve the beauty of this spot. During the fall I was driving in Vermont and came to the top of a mountain and looked across all the other mountains below and couldn't believe the blight on the landscape from a windmill project miles away. It look like a giant picket fence crawling over the hills. There's got to be a better way.

12. Of course it is. The sun does shine on the Maine coast - honest.
Once you break through the morning fog it's like every other place in the world. The house at Walker Point is so long they could have panels upon panels upon panels. For heat they could use geothermal. At least it's only 1 windmill . . . for now. If the Bushies figure they can make money off anything they'll stick a hundred around the house.

8. Hmm. I wonder if it has enough power to keep the sumps running when Greenland slides off
into the Atlantic and the Antarctic shelf breaks off?
