39. Pelosi is not next in line
Pelosi would only be next in line if there was a vacancy in both the offices of president and vice president at the same time. If there is a vacancy in the office of the vice president, Bush would choose someone and they would be confirmed by the Senate.

43. There has been a vacancy in the office of president since Jan. 2001
except for a brief period when shrub was being operated on.

On a more serious note, I don't think there is any constitutional reason why the Senate cannot refuse to approve any selection the vacancy's people make.

40. No, not in this case
The current occupant of the White House would nominate someone to be vice president, and a majority of both houses of Congress would be required to confirm (Amendment XXV).

Interesting thought: if Congress could not reach agreement to confirm a nominee and the occupant had to nominate a succession of people, leaving the office of vice president vacant during the process, and then the occupant were to leave office in some way, then the Speaker of the House would become president.

88. OK. No.
Pelosi fills in in case of the Daily Double (one short of a trifecta) in which the President AND the Vice President are both unable to be President.

That having been said, in the case of Cheney's permanent incapacity, I would hope that at least 40 Senators decide that we really don't absolutely have to have a Vice President since there is indeed a line of succession in the Constitution that is fairly detailed and unambiguous. Thus, none of this "you have to confirm Jar Jar Binks as Veep right motherfucking now 9/11 9/11 Osama terrists ZOMFG..."

50. I have an atrial fibrilation....
...the standard treatment starts with baby aspirin (81mg), proceeds through Coumadin (otherwise known as warfarin, which is rat poison. Appropo for our Shitstain Shoots-Guy-In-Face), and there is a procedure involving a stent, which moderates the flutter. Anyway one looks at it, Shitstain has a much more elevated chance of having a stroke. I'll stop there before I get the attention of Agent Stupid Incompetent.

(For those who care, I take aspirin and my cardio guy says he can barely find the flutter).

143. He has a defibrillator.
That helps with a much more serious type of irregularity, which happens in the lower part of the heart. That can cause instant death.

Pacemakers help with atrial fibrillation, which affects the upper part of the heart.

I have atrial fib, due to my Grave's Disease. Overactive thyroids often cause irregular heartbeats. Mine is not quite as bad as it was, because I am on meds, and I had my thyroid killed with radioactivity. I may still need a pacemaker, though. Quite often, episodes of atrial fib correct themselves. But if they persist long enough, they are harder for the heart to correct on its own. And if Cheney starts warfarin, he may be on it for life. I take that, too. Often, doctors keep patients on it forever, just to avert the risk of blood clots.

Don't get your hopes up too much. If atrial fib really is his problem, he will be around for awhile. I wonder if they are telling us the truth, though. They might be feeding us that story just because so many people are familiar with atrial fib and they know it is common and not terribly serious.

66. Cheney experiencing "Irregular heartbeats"
Source: CBS News website

Vice President Dick Cheney, who has a history of heart problems, experienced an irregular heartbeat Monday and will be evaluated at George Washington University Hospital.

The condition was detected when Cheney was seen by doctors for a lingering cough from a cold.
