Red Cross Chief Ousted Over "Relationship"
NEW YORK (AP) ― The American Red Cross ousted its president, Mark Everson, on Tuesday after learning that he had engaged in a "personal relationship" with a subordinate employee.

Everson, the former commissioner of the Internal Revenue Service, took the Red Cross job last May as the charity sought to restructure itself after sharp criticism of its response to Hurricane Katrina.

In a statement, the Red Cross said asked for and received Everson's resignation, effective immediately, after learning of the relationship.

"It concluded that the situation reflected poor judgment on Mr. Everson's part and diminished his ability to lead the organization in the future," the statement said. It did not identify the other employee.

White House Gets a New Ethics Lawyer

In recent moves of note, the top ethics lawyer for the White House, Nanette Everson, left last Friday to spend more time with her family, which includes IRS Commissioner Mark W. Everson.

Nanette Everson, who joined the counsel's office after that little dust-up about counselor Karl Rove's Enron holdings a few years back, gets high marks in the White House, especially given the lack of major first-term ethics scandals.

The one exception might have been the blowup of the Bernie Kerik nomination for intelligence czar, but she's not faulted for that, since she wasn't asked to do the sex, drugs and rock-and-roll part of the vetting.

11. It is a sordid tale. The Red Cross was sold to the House of Morgan
back in 1908. It was then used as a front for spying in Europe after WWI. One of the plotters in the FDR coup used it as a nexus for his informants. This guy got a medal from Benito Mussolini for his role getting IL Duce into the presidency.

8. How sad a state is it.
When I believe that I'd rather trust this ousted, cheating, ex IRS head
than his "lead ETHICS lawyer" for the White House wife...

The Red Cross said its board "acted quickly" after learning the 53-year-old Mr. Everson had had a "personal relationship with a subordinate employee." The Red Cross wouldn't confirm or deny the pregnancy or identify the employee.

In a brief statement released by the Red Cross, Mr. Everson, who is married, said he was resigning "for personal and family reasons," and said he deeply regrets "it is impossible for me to continue in a job so recently undertaken." He couldn't be reached for further comment.

While CEOs sometimes have relationships with subordinates, until recently it was rare for such behavior to lead to a public dismissal. In April, Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide Inc.'s board ousted CEO Steven Heyer after receiving an anonymous letter accusing him of making sexual advances to female employees. An independent investigation reportedly uncovered emails substantiating the claims. Mr. Heyer has denied the allegations.

<snip>

In helping place Mr. Everson in the job, Heidrick & Struggles International Inc., a large executive-search firm, compiled a 33-page report based on interviews with references, according to a knowledgeable individual. Joie Gregor, the Heidrick recruiter who played a major role in the search, became President Bush's assistant for presidential personnel in September. Ms. Gregor declined yesterday to comment on Mr. Everson's ouster.

edited to add the tie-in to Dimson
