US not seeking permanent Iraq bases: White House
Source: AFP

WASHINGTON (AFP) — The White House denied Thursday that the United States seeks permanent military bases in Iraq, days after the US "war czar" said that would be part of talks next year on long-term security ties.

"We do not seek permanent bases in Iraq," spokeswoman Dana Perino told reporters after Lieutenant General Douglas Lute said Monday that the flashpoint issue would be part of negotiations to decide the future of US troops in Iraq.

Asked about such installations, Lute told reporters: "That's another dimension of continuing US support to the government of Iraq, and will certainly be a key item for negotiation next year."

1. Why would we seek them when we have them already?
I guess they could always play around with their definition of what 'permanent' means.

3. Yeah, like we're only in Japan and Germany on a "temporary" basis.
And we only have "temporary" bases in hundreds of places around the world. What a silly idea.

5. DEFINE permanent for us, please

because anything that lasts 1-2 years more (as part of a phased withdrawal time period) is PERMANENT to me.

Sorry to hear that. Or rather, sorry to hear that they said that. Because it's just another lie. One of a long string of lies. And not even a particularly believable one.
