Turkish army fires on PKK in Iraq

The Turkish army says it has inflicted "heavy losses" on rebels from the Kurdish separatist PKK movement across the border in Iraq.

The army said it fired on a group of about 50 rebels. It was not immediately clear whether troops entered Iraq.

2. Is Turkey following America's lead - anyone killed is, by default, a rebel or terrorist?

Turkish army moves into northern Iraq

The Turkish army says it has entered northern Iraq, in a move against a group of between 50 and 60 Kurdish rebels. The army said it had inflicted "heavy losses" on the group of armed Kurdish separatists. Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan said on Friday his cabinet had authorised the armed forces to conduct a cross-border operation against Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) rebels. The army said it could step up its "intervention" in the region if necessary. Turkey had massed up to 100,000 troops near the mountainous border, backed up by tanks, artillery and warplanes, for a possible strike into mainly Kurdish northern Iraq against PKK rebels hiding there.
