Australia has ratified the Kyoto Protocol.

Prime Minister Kevin Rudd signed the instrument of ratification of the Kyoto Protocol in his first act after being sworn in this morning.

The ratification will come into force in 90 days.

“This is the first official act of the new Australian government, demonstrating my government’s commitment to tackling climate change,” Mr Rudd said in a statement.

4. That's a pretty bold first act.
Our guy would just cut taxes for a group of 16 people and then go on vacation.

22. Too bloody right, Matilda!
This is fantastic. To now actually follow through, though, with real action to match the symbolism and promises will be their real test.

That said, though, for now, I also say: Bloody proud to be an Aussie today! ;-)

30. top-notch people you've got on your negotiating team!
As a Canadian, I'm envious. I am sorry that Kevin Rudd, Penny Wong, Peter Garrett, and the rest of your delegates will have to put up with our guy (John Baird), who is barely capable of sharpening a pencil. I'm glad that Australia will be recognized as a world leader on this issue (I know a few CSIRO scientists who have been way out ahead, for years).

"During the United Nations Climate Change (UNCC) conference in Bali, delegates broke into spontaneous applause when news of Australia's decision was announced yesterday. Some delegates of the 12-day conference gave the Australian delegation a standing ovation."

11. don't expect any carbon reductions
due to tricky wording,
Australia gets a 25 percent increase in allowances (over 1990),
which means they can do nothing, and pass.

I'll post details, if anyone is interested.

12. Yeah, maybe, but I think Kevin Rudd is making a statement with this.
His first official act after being sworn in. Think about the message that sends to the world - that he is SERIOUS about global warming.

So far so good, Kevin07!

13. torching Koala habitat paid off
because Australia is torching pristine
Koala habitat at a slower rate than in 1990,
the country gets an essentially free pass on 'normal emissions',
which means they currently meet their Kyoto obligation
without lifting a finger.

15. The US is now the only country not to accept the Kyoto Protocol now?
Edited on Mon Dec-03-07 09:02 AM by DJ MEW
If I am not mistaken this make the US the only country, in the industrialized world for sure, and I think it also makes us the only country in the entire world, that has not signed on to this.

Do you think in 2009 when our new government is sworn in we will act as fast to sign on to it?

18. Hey Democrats, this is what someone is supposed to do when the people elect them for a purpose.
When the people put you into office to do a certain job, you need to make it a priority. What has it been now, over a year and still no accountability of the administration. Still no health care initiatives, no withdrawing from Iraq, no initiatives on global warming, what have they done? Make everything Bush* has done illegally, legal retroactivly..Insure more money for the killing of Iraqis gets passed time and time again..Where is this big list Peloisi was supposed to present to the people heralding all their accomplishments?

23. WHY I DON'T THINK WE SHOULD RATIFY...BY GEORGE W BUSH
my fellow americans, i have studied, and studied, and studied, boy this presidenting is hard work. did i mention that i have studied the key-yo-to protocol? my wife laura reads me a chapter every night at bedtime before she tucks me in for the nap. first of all, the key-yo-to thing is obviously "asian" and this would give them the upper hand in showmanship. they are just trying to get back at my dad for puking on their president. did you see him chuck it. reminded me of my brainless disorderly drunk days...hey that was just last week. so who named this thing? it is the save a life bill? the clean air act? the leave no child behind? NO. it is not. who knows what a key-yo-to is. could be a jap car. the toyoto key-yo-to. and how would a car help global warming? i rest my case. got to go back in now, my handlers are signaling that i have been on the interglobal internets too long. see you on MY SPACE, where i am a cowboy clearing brush.

25. We too have a similar candidate
who would also ratify the Kyoto Protocol. His name is Dennis Kucinich and he has been speaking to this very thing for a long time now. If you are proud to see the new progressive leadership in Australia, then realize we can have the same here in America. We only need to vote Kucinich come primary election day. No Republican could win the heart of Americans in a matchup against Kucinich, and the Republican candidate would end up with the support of only his base of Corporate lackeys and a few gay haters. It's obvious why the controlled media doesn't cover Kucinich, it's because they know he could EASILY win the hearts, minds, and support of the American people if given unfettered and uncontrolled access to the airwaves. They will of course continue to control the perception of Kucinich that America receives in the hope he is knocked out in the primaries, but I hope, for the sake of America now and the generations of Americans to come, that we will actively reject the blatant attempt of the media to steer our elections on behalf of corporate interests, and cast our vote for Kucinich in the primaries. The country you save could be your own.

Kucinich 08...Right Then...Right Now...Right For America :patriot:
