Feds probe Sept. 11 insurance fund
Source: AP/Yahoo

WASHINGTON - Federal officials said Monday they will investigate why a $1 billion Sept. 11 insurance fund created by Congress to cover claims of sick ground zero workers is fighting the cases in court rather than distributing money.

The World Trade Center Captive Insurance Company has come under increasing scrutiny from Congress and the federal government, as roughly 8,000 individual claims await judgment in the federal court system.

The inspector general for the Homeland Security Department indicated he intends to examine the issue, telling Congress in a report that his inquiry will determine why the insurance company "has chosen to litigate all claims instead of settling whenever possible."

According to documents sent to Congress and due to be released later this week, the inspector general's review will also determine "what procedures have been established to receive, review and pay medical, hospital, surgical and disability benefits to injured persons," as well as benefits to the relatives of those killed.

1. In a word......greed.
They know the courts will be friendly to them and eventually alot of claims will just give up or the plaintiffs will die before they can collect.

3. It's the floodgates
For years, industry has been working their asses off fighting every environmental injury claim. They do not want any precedent established that would require them to pay claims for illnesses they say is all in the peoples heads or from some other source.

For years they have referred to the floodgates that would open if claims such as this are approved. They are truly scared that 9/11 may tip the scales against them. They are even trying to take the license of a doctor who is acutally helping these people.

Hope Congress finds them criminally liable for the additional injury they have cause these people.

4. they're litigating because they know most of the claimnants will die before
their case will ever get to court. They don't intend to ever pay a penny.

7. Hey that one billion is their money, Congress gave it to them
They will be damned if they give it to some pathetic souls from ground zero..Besides most of it has already been spent on new yachts and jet planes and diamonds..
