Drug tunnel found on U.S.-Mexico border
Source: Associated Press

TECATE, Calif. - The U.S. Border Patrol said Monday that it discovered a secret tunnel that may have been used for smuggling drugs across the U.S.-Mexico border east of San Diego.

Authorities found an estimated 10,000 pounds of marijuana inside a trailer that led to the underground crevice, said Eileen Zeidler, a spokeswoman for the Drug Enforcement Administration.

A Border Patrol agent heard noise Monday from the 30-foot trailer parked 360 yards north of the border in the town of Tecate, agency spokesman James Jacques said.

When he peered inside, he saw a pistol-toting man disappear into a hole. The trailer was half-full of packages containing the marijuana.

The Border Patrol says it's unclear if the tunnel was completed. U.S. and Mexican authorities are investigating.

Authorities have discovered dozens of tunnels along the U.S.-Mexico border in recent years, with many clustered around San Diego and Nogales, Ariz.

1. What's this? You can dig UNDER fences?
Someone needs to inform the White House of this amazing new Mexican technological advancement. Do you realize what this could mean to the fence we're building?

4. It's ok - everyone knows you can't smuggle people through a drug tunnel.

6. Jeb probably understands
I don't know if he was governor when those cubans dug the tunnel under the fence at Glades Correctional Institution and got out. Lawton Chiles might still have been governor at that point.

Mexico police chief murder linked to border tunnel
04 Dec 2007 17:53:57 GMT

By Lizbeth Diaz

TIJUANA, Mexico, Dec 4 (Reuters - Gunmen killed the police chief
of a Mexican city bordering California on Tuesday by shooting him
some 50 times in an apparent revenge attack after police found a
drug-smuggling tunnel under the border.

Gunmen broke into the house of Tecate police chief Juan Soriano
in the early hours of the morning and shot him repeatedly in the
face and torso as he slept in bed with his wife, an official at
the Baja California state attorney general's office told Reuters.
His wife was not hit.

The killing of Soriano, who had started his job only last week,
appeared to be an act of revenge against Mexican police, who on
Monday discovered a tunnel nearly a mile (1.6 km) long running into
California from Tecate near the Pacific coast after a tip-off from
the U.S. Border Patrol.

"As soon as Soriano made public the discovery of the tunnel, he went
home and hours later, they executed him in his bedroom," said the
official, who requested anonymity.
