Bush still a factor, Rove warns
Source: WashTimes

President Bush, down and all but counted out by friend and foe alike just three months ago, is rising like a bloodied but unbowed prizefighter, and Karl Rove predicts peril for Republicans and their presidential nominee if they shun the lame-duck president on the campaign trail.

...

"Nobody can risk looking disrespectful to the president without paying a price, and they need to understand that," said Mr. Rove, Mr. Bush's former top political adviser.

...

"If the Democrats make this about, as they seem to be inclined to do, 'I'm not Bush, and I'll do everything different than Bush did,' the American people understand that Bush is not on the ballot," he said.

...

Mr. Rove said the president just received the best possible gift from the House's most vocal war critic, Rep. John P. Murtha, who just returned from a trip to Iraq and stated flatly: "The surge is working."

"It was a remarkable moment last week when Jack Murtha, who said the war is lost, the surge won't work, comes back and says the surge is working. You know that there's real progress on the ground when the most ardent, acerbic critic of the president's policy says in essence, 'I was wrong,' " Mr. Rove said.

He slurs his way to a purse lipped close. Hankies awaiting in the wings. Who will give this man a big hug?

Jeff, he needs you.

24. Ummm, sorry, Karl, respect must be earned
not automatically bestowed on *. I can't think of one thing he has done that is worthy of respect.

And, incidentally, I don't recall alot of respect being given to President Clinton.

6. Actually Rove as usual offered his own spin on what Murtha said.
What Murtha said was, "I think the surge is working, but that is only one element."

That is hardly the same as 'stating flatly, "The surge is working."' And Murtha certainly did not state in essence that he was wrong.

7. Yeah, well, we're working on fixing that
If you mean "obstructionist asshole" when you say "factor".

Man, George Lakoff has Bush's personality nailed to a T. "Strict father model" to the extreme, all puffed up with moral authority and totally deflated by advanced cluelessness.

8. Murtha is saying that violence is down.
But, the purpose of the surge was to buy time for the Iraqi government to reach a political solution, and that they have shown no signs of doing. We can't keep the surge up forever and there is no reason to belive that violence won't just go right back up when we draw down troops, which we inevitably have to do. So, in that sense the surge may be working. However the more important question is whether the Iraq strategy in general is working. More Rovian tricks.

13. This isn't about Bush as much as it's about Rove.
Rove has so much of his ego (and narcissism) wrapped around making Bush look good, that he feels compelled to battle Bush's political irrelevancy at every turn.

21. Do not chuckle at what Rove said. Just take a look at the
platforms of nearly all the republican candidates and you will see the bush policies all are following and speaking too and addressing. So it is nothing to laugh about. It is something the dem candidates or anyone from the national dem offices need to make folks aware of...

22. They're resurrecting their base with this, reclaiming competence and security as GOP turf
A few of the overlooked facts include that the Sunnis had already agreed to work with the US because they were afraid of Iran. Moqtada al-sadr has declared a 6-month stand down, which had nothing to do with the surge. Even more refugees were created as people fled Baghdad ahead of the surge... there are many reasons Iraq looks relatively stable. To attribute it all to the surge does not capture the complexity. And to claim success with the surge suggests that the GOP thinks the progress is permanent, or that it's an opportunity to redeem all of their past failed policies with one shiny new meme. But if the Anbar Awakening tires of their alliance, if Moqtada goes back on the warpath, if the Kurds and Turkey have a go at it, if having Chalabi running the rehabilitation of Baghdad turns out to be a bad choice... will Rove still claim responsibility? Will Snow claim vindication?
