Canada turning away more Americans for past legal infractions
Source: Plain Dealer

Now, police at the international border can access the same records available to cops at the Lakewood-Rocky River border - including that years-old DUI.

The Canadians and their American counterparts are using digital equipment that lets them access criminal history through items such as license plates, passports and driver's licenses...

1. Maybe more Americans *should* find out what it's like on the receiving end.
There's what goes around, and here's what comes around.

2. "American woman, stay away from me-ee,
don't come hangin' around my door, don't wanna see your face no more."

From "American Woman", by the Guess Who

An old anti-American song by a Canadian band.

20. One of my favorites. Randy Bachman recently said
that the "woman" is the Statue of Liberty, and that there are references to the Vietnam War in it.

3. Brought to you through Echelon - a pact of gringos to help each other
spy on each other - by satellite and now, they have probably hooked up Poindexter's database and the INS and HS database that lists your reading habits as well.

4. In other words, bush is not welcome.
So if they let bush in for some reason, a stink needs to be raised.

22. On the contrary, it validates the coming of it. they are working together now.
It never used to be like that just a couple years ago. there will be a North American Union and it will be ran on a neo-conservative breakneck capitalist agenda - with human rights being an afterthought.

11. Great border story
A friend of mine got stopped and they told him to go into a certain room etc etc.
After a while they get out the big book of everything and they keep calling people into this room to look at it. Pretty soon he hears laughing and babbling in French then in broken english.....No No No figh-air-crack-air!
They all come out crying and say you are free to go etc etc.

It turns out he almost didn't get into Canada because he was arrested in Iowa for a misdemeanor of throwing a firecracker. It took a while for the garda to figure out it was not a weapons charge but a fire cracker charge.
Too funny!

14. What about "political crimes" like sit-ins or other peaceful resistance?
What will happen to the activists arrested at the Free Trade of the Americas conference and the 2004 Republican National Convention?

16. You probably can have been arrested but you certainly can't have been convicted...
Edited on Tue Dec-04-07 03:43 PM by Tesha
...Or you'll have to go sit on the "Group W" bench.
And even a mere arrest *MAY* be enough if the FBI wants
to get nasty on you.

Several Code Pinkers (including Medea Benjamin) found
this out recently.

17. Aw, this is bullshit
I've always felt a sense of pride because Canada didn't do that crap (not letting someone across the border for some minor past offence). Now we've gone over to the dark side. Gimme a break - "holding a joint"? When the penalty in Canada is usually just taking it away??

19. Medical mj users are also turned back
"We were there for three hours. One woman was in tears. A guy was sent back for having a medical marijuana card.

(there was another article I cannot find. It said there were
a number of medical users denied entrance.)

Some day the US & Canadian republiCons will need mj
for their own medical problems.
