(Kay Bailey) Hutchison drops out of leadership race
Source: Politico.com

Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-Texas) is dropping out of the race for the No. 3 Republican leadership job, according to congressional sources.

Hutchison is informing her GOP colleagues Tuesday, setting the stage for a new face in the Republican hierarchy. It's now a two-man race for GOP Conference Chairman: Sens. Richard Burr of North Carolina and Lamar Alexander of Tennessee.

Hutchison's exit was widely rumored on Capitol Hill late last week. As Politico reported this morning, she had alienated her conservative colleagues in recent months and endangered her chances of moving up the GOP ranks. She will remain chairwoman of the Republican Policy Committee, meaning she retains a seat at the leadership office, albeit a less influential one.

The leadership elections - set in motion by GOP Whip Trent Lott's unexpected resignation - are set for Thursday. The current Conference chair, Sen. Jon Kyl (R-Ariz.), will easily win the race to replace Lott because he is unopposed.

Wasn't she planning to bail out of the Senate completely?

Maybe now she'll retire like she's been saying for the past 6 years. That woman is truly evil.

3. She just want to come back here and
run for governor. I really miss the days when Texas voted Democratic Party for local (and US Congressional) elections. Ann Richards was the end of an era (and I miss her).

7. I fear you're correct
All in all I suppose it's for the best. She's our mess and much as I hate it, I 'd rather have to deal with them on a local level than on a national one. :(

4. She's my guess for VP candidate
assuming Hillary wins the nomination that is.

I figure the Republican nominee will want a woman on the ticket to counter Hillary's historic run, and Hutchison looks like the best woman candidate on the other side.

10. That would keep the Bush / Dole link.
A Bush or a Dole has been on the GOP ticket since 1976.
