(CNN) -- White House hopeful Mitt Romney on Thursday articulated his position on the role of religion in America, but avoided details about his personal faith.

Romney, who hopes to become the first Mormon president, said "religious tolerance would be a shallow principle, indeed, if it were reserved only for faiths with which we agree."

5. Religious Pandering ....
http://www.religionfacts.com/mormonism/beliefs/afterlife.htm

How is it that every religious nut running for office and the 'politically correct' religious nuts seem so willing to toss out their sacred teachings to appear 'tolerant'? Fact is, every doctrine has it's own form of we're going to heaven and you're not, unless you become one of us. It's just one of the numerous examples of how religion has never been tolerant.

For example:

Mormons believe ... that Faithful Mormons and their families will live in the presence of God and be rewarded in accordance with what they have done during their lives.

Joseph Smith also taught that families can live together forever in heaven if they are "sealed" through special temple ceremonies.

What about non-Mormons? "Those who choose not to follow our Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ will receive a reward according to what they have done in this life, but they will not enjoy the glory of living in the presence of God."

Mormons do believe in hell. Those who did not repent (i.e., To stand as a witness that Joseph Smith was the Lord's anointed through whom the latter-day work of restoration would be accomplished, while on Earth will experience a temporary hell after death (during the time that all spirits go to the spirit world before the Resurrection), but will have an opportunity to repent afterwards and avoid the eternal hell. Hell as an eternal place of misery it is inhabited only by Satan and those who explicitly reject "the Heavenly Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost" even after the period of instruction after death.

And, this little gem from Brigham Young "No man or woman in this dispensation will ever enter into the celestial kingdom of God without the consent of Joseph Smith … Every man and woman must have the certificate of Joseph Smith, Junior, as a passport to their entrance into the mansion where God and Christ are."

Now, I don't think Mormons are any wackier or disingenuous than the rest of the religious figures - but, today Romney exemplified the extent to which religious figures will compromise and/or obfuscate the ridiculous doctrines/teachings of their faith for political or personal gain.

with out freedom there can be no religion
take away one and the other CANNOT exist

then there were the usual seperation of church and state is out of control, founding fathers were all religious and so we should all be too, plus the awful left wing judges who hate religion

10. Great resource for religious silliness
http://skepticsannotatedbible.com/

And, a few quotes on 'tolerance' from the Book of Mormon:

"The Native Americans are the decedents of those "who dwindled in unbelief." As a punishment for their disbelief, their skin was darkened and they became "a filthy people, full of idleness and all manner of abominations."

"All those that fight again Zion (Mormonism), like "that great whore, that great and abominable church" will be destroyed."

"Those who don't fight against Zion (the Mormon Church) and who don't join "the great and abominable church (the Catholic Church) will be saved."

"All those that fight again Zion (Mormonism), like "that great whore, that great and abominable church" will be destroyed."

"Jews are wicked. Only the Jews would crucify their God."

"Before many generations pass, Native Americans will convert to Mormonism, their skins will turn white, and they will become a "delightsome" people."

"He that shall breathe out wrath and strifes against the work of the Lord ... the same is in danger to be hewn down and cast into the fire."

blah, blah, blah ... all religious 'holy books' have different versions of the same B$

How can anyone who made it past potty training buy this stuff?

12. If you really want to see the racism in the Book of Mormon....
Get a copy from before the 1970s. It was around that time that "the most perfect book ever written" was "revised" to remove most of the racism put there by Joseph Smith.

25. These guys are REALLY scaring me now ...

These guys seem to be spinning up in earnest for a real religious war between "believers" and nonbelievers. Sure some politicians will just ride the message to get the votes. But they don't realize what can happen when they get people really fired up. And of course, they haven't thought about the next war over exactly how to recite the Lord's prayer and the number of sacraments if they actually win.

15. I wish we could go back to the days...
...when religious belief, or lack thereof, was a private matter & not something to be constantly shoved down society's throat!

This is America. Everyone has the right to believe, or not believe, whatever they want, but why must they subject the public to their credo of "My God/unbelief is better than your God/unbelief?"

If I want to be preached to, I'll go to church! I personally couldn't care less if Romney's a Mormon or Huckleberry's a fundie. (I wouldn't vote for them anyway, but that's another topic for another time.)

Isn't there a verse in the Bible about praying in secret vs. on the street corners? Ugh.

16. Why he should not be President: "Freedom requires religion."
Olbermann was bright enough to highlight the irony of this statement in view of Romney's pretense of echoing JFK's speech, but I doubt the rest of the media will do more than parrot the prepared narrative.

28. Mormon Mitt Romney says he would serve a broad church
Source: Times. UK

December 7, 2007
Mormon Mitt Romney says he would serve a broad church
Tom Baldwin

Mitt Romney confronted the suspicions towards his Mormon faith that have threatened to derail his Republican presidential campaign, promising yesterday that he would “serve no one religion, no one group, no one cause”.

...........

“Like him, I am an American running for president. I do not define my candidacy by my religion. A person should not be elected because of his faith nor should he be rejected because of his faith,” Mr Romney said.

A recent survey found that a quarter of voters had reservations about electing a Mormon president and that the religion was regarded as a cult by evangelicals, who exercise great influence in the Republican Party.

39. Pinnochio wants to be a REAL boy
but he just can't stop lying and so his nose grows and grows. He can't help it, he comes from a long line of such purveyors of obfuscation and revisionist history and he's been so well trained in the art that it's second nature to change positions, to re position his position, to deny, cover up and feign ignorance at the lies or inconsistancies. Yes, he's a dyed in the wool McMormon, but that makes him ripe for the kind of distortion necessary to be the perfect wooden puppet for the Republican Puppetmasters.

If you want to know how many Mormon Leaders have practiced "lying for the Lord" in the past, here's an in-depth link. This man's experience is very common among those who try to leave or make sense of the church doctrine. http://www.exmormon.org/whylft149.htm

Mitt Romney will jettison loyalties and change his sneakers for whatever race he's in, but don't think for a moment that he is capable of even seeing the truth. He has been conditioned from birth to close his eyes to reality, fact, or reason.

It provides for an election of a President to serve the country.

If he wants to be a church leader than go back to Salt Lake City and ask them to be their Mormon leader.
