Three prisoners executed in Japan
Source: BBC News

Japanese authorities have hanged three men, bringing the number of executions in the country this year to nine.

For the first time, the names of the hanged men were made public.

Previously, authorities would not release any details about executed men, in order to reduce the psychological damage to their families.

Human rights groups have been critical of the secrecy surrounding executions in Japan, one of the few industrialised countries to retain the death penalty.

Bad enough that Japan practices this, but hangings ...?

1. Noboru Ikemoto, 75
WTF. Well, at least they're not using them as quality-control acceptance testing for samurai swords...

2. The Katana does not strike me as that barbaric
now the wakisashi use... during that execution...

I have a serious problem with the death penalty overall but given the Japanese culture does not surprise me that they still have
the death penalty.

And no, I am not justifying it...

3. Not much detail in the story.
Like what they did to merit it and what the process is in Japan.

4. All convicted of mulitiple murders....
"Fujima was convicted of murdering five people, while Fukawa was executed for robbery and murder of two people. Ikemoto received a death sentence for killing three people and the attempted murder of another."

7. It's state-sanctioned murder
Do you believe it's okay for one innocent person to be put to death, just as long as everyone else who commits heinous crimes is executed also? How can you ever be 100% sure of one's guilt? How many times have we seen people set free decades after the fact in this country?

Even when guilt can be determined rather sufficiently, why not merely incarcerate them for the remainder of their lives, with no parole?

11. Because such people forfeit their right to live...
If someone confesses, or the evidence shows they absolutely did it, I could give a shit care less if they die, especially mass murderers.

No doubt our justice system needs alot of work, but I will not whine over genuine scum. Who is to say an asshole Governor might not come along, like Huckabee, and give them clemency or a parole recommendation, so they can go on to kill again?

14. If someone confesses? Really, that's all you need?
Do you know how many "confessions" turn out to be false? Just because someone confesses to a crime doesn't mean jack shit. There could be any number of reasons for someone to confess to a crime they didn't commit - police coercion, mental instability, etc.

18. Your flippant response belies your ignorance about the effects of the death penalty.
But hey, maybe that's why you're getting the society you asked for.

9. Hangings, electric chair, lethal injection, beheading, what's the difference?

The person's just as dead one way or the other.

15. There is a difference and I believe hanging to be more ethical than
our American procedure for lethal injection.

I am against the death penalty for the most part, but if you are going to put a person to death hanging can be one of the better ways to go about doing so. A great deal of facts can be found here:

17. Hanging was the only way it was done in Canada
All executions in Canada were by hanging. We used the "long drop" method, which ensured the neck was broken, and then the prisoner died of asphyxiation while unconscious.

The last Canadian execution was is 1962, and the death penalty was taken off the books in 1976.
