Ex-Alaska Lawmaker Sentenced in Oil Case

Friday December 7, 2007 9:46 PM

By DAN JOLING

Associated Press Writer

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) - Former Alaska House Speaker
Pete Kott was sentenced to six years in a federal prison
Friday for accepting $9,000 in bribes from the founder
of an oil field services company.

U.S. District Court Judge John Sedwick bumped up the
prison term beyond sentencing guidelines after concluding
that Kott had committed perjury during his trial. He also
said the legislation Kott took bribes to influence - a
revised tax law on Alaska's principal industry, crude oil
extraction - affected every Alaskan.

“The amount of money was in the hundreds of millions,
if not billions,” Sedwick said.

Kott was convicted in September of bribery, extortion
and conspiracy for his dealings with executives of VECO
Corp., a major Alaska firm that performed maintenance,
design and construction contracts for petroleum producers.

5. They turned "state's evidence" and are acting a chief witness for the prosecution
They allowed the FBI to wiretap them and tap their phones and place video cameras in their hotel rooms. This guy was caught on tape taking the money along with several others which have already been sentenced. All Republicans I might add. There are more shoes to fall I am fairly certain..

6. They actually took the cost to the public. Wow.
So, this guy takes a $9000 bribe to bilk the public of millions, and possibly billions of dollars?

We get sold out pretty cheaply these days, don't we?
