Tax reform unites Republicans in last debate
Source: MSNBC

DES MOINES, Iowa - Republicans running for president called Wednesday for massive tax reform as they debated for the last time before the leadoff Iowa caucuses on Jan. 3.

Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee has vaulted to the front-running position, overtaking longtime leader Mitt Romney, the former governor of Massachusetts, in a matter of weeks. As he has advanced, more scrutiny is being paid to his policy positions, especially his advocacy of a so-called fair tax, a national 23 percent sales tax that would eliminate the Internal Revenue Service.

Rudy Giuliani, the former mayor of New York, endorsed a “flatter tax you could file on one form,” but he said the "fair tax" also “would be a good idea.”

Likewise, Rep. Duncan Hunter of California welcomed the "fair tax," saying the idea “is a good one.”

Speaking more generally, Sen. John McCain of Arizona urged a simplification of the tax system. “We’ve got to reform the tax code,” McCain said. “No one understands it.”

Also love God and America (order depends on who they are talking to)

Gladd that the SENATOR FROM ARIZONA doesn't understand the tax code since he votes on it and everything. Now if only there were a profession that DID understand this behemoth tax code...if only.

3. This stupid sound bite from Giuliani.
In case you were wondering about the degree of Rudy Giuliani's pandering to the few families trying to get a total repeal of the estate tax, get a load of the sound bite he's trotting out for debates:

"...we should give the death penalty to the death tax. It really is a very unfair tax."

Apparently he's used that repeatedly on the campaign trail, probably in front of people who will never have to pay said tax but will take note of the rhetoric (i.e., "death tax" instead of "estate tax").

In a debate full of low moments, and borderline snotty-schoolboy tormenting of the moderator -- talk about a thankless job -- Giuliani's comment gets the Harvey Lembeck Memorial "You Stupids!" Dishonorable Mention. Or maybe it's the Kit Bond Cranial-Rectal Inversion Award. Or something.

4. The Rubes applaud

The Rubes all applaud until serious questions are asked about why they are going to pay 25%. Then the candidates start talking about rebates, and the cycle begins again.

Truth is, there is nothing difficult about looking in a table to determine your rate. It is an insult to every American to suggest that they cannot operate 4 inequalities.

Ues, of course ALL of these plans are just thinly veiled veneers for cutting taxes for the wealthy and shifting the burden on working men and women.
