UK: A Battalion a year lost to cocaine sackings (over 500 tested positive for drugs)
Source: UK/The Herald

The Army sacked more than five times as many soldiers for cocaine abuse in the 18 months to June this year as it lost in combat in Iraq and Afghanistan combined, The Herald can reveal.

And those figures might be "the tip of the iceberg" masking a wider problem linked to the intensity of operations in the two war zones, according to a new independent study of Ministry of Defence figures.

An analysis by the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI) published today shows that between 500 and 600 trained troops were dismissed after testing positive for the drug during that period, while 100 died fighting insurgents in the two war zones.

Professor Sheila Bird, a senior scientist and statistician with the British Medical Council who carried out research for the study, said yesterday that cocaine use among soldiers had quadrupled since 2003.

2. With all those poppy fields taking over Afghanistan
it is very likely these guys weren't into cocaine when they joined up. They were likely thinking "Hey its a shitty job and look over there a huge pile of free/cheap drugs."

3. Poppies do not cocaine make....
Where is the coke coming from? I am sure they are finding a balance there- get down with poppies and up with cocaine, but where is the coke coming from? Just wondering.

5. True. Well, there is that story about the rendition plane which just crashed
carrying loads of cocaine. If the plane carries people to countries to be tortured, it isn't hard to believe it would be adverse to being a coke supply line for the occupation troops.

10. cocaine is sure in abundance around here
Edited on Fri Dec-14-07 08:57 PM by policypunk
you used to see alot of marijuana around here, but now all the kids are doing coke and from what I hear it is pretty fucking pure.

You just know the war on drugs is a victory when high school students can afford to be coked out of their minds with their allowance or job at the mall.
