Japan deadlock over US warships
Source: BBC News

Japan's government has extended the parliamentary session into the new year for the first time in 14 years, in an effort to pass a controversial bill.

Opposition MPs, who control the upper house, are blocking the bill, which would allow Japan to refuel US warships involved in conflict in Afghanistan.

But Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda is determined to secure a renewal for the mandate of the refuelling mission.

Analysts say the stand-off may damage Japan's security alliance with the US.

2. good!
1) Let them have their own form of self-defense
2) Let them have more sovereignty, through control of their own affairs and non-dependence on the U.S.
3) Let this be a further barrier to American imperialism in the world. Everything that aids it should be opposed.

5. They have their own self-defense force.
Lots of people in Asia remember what the Japanese did in WWII, which began in northern China in 1934. We may not be loved, but in those places, history means something, and the Japanese were the bad guys.

Japan has not faced up to is WWII atrocities in the same way the Germany has, or the way the the U.S. has with respect to Japanese internment. They are unreconstructed and consider themselves as victims, only. It is very dangerous, IMHO.

6. The Japanese navy is the fourth or fifth largest in the world
with very high tech and effective weapons. They still pay a lot of money for US bases in Japan for two main reasons: it saves them a lot of money and it allows them to avoid the issue of developing their own nuclear weapons.

This issue about refueling American ships has nothing to do with the Japanese attitudes towards the US military and everything to do with internal Japanese political maneuvering prior to elections.

3. Japan should be extremely wary of dealings with totalitarian, un-free nations like Amerika
Nations such as ours have no word to break, they are awash in lies, and nations such as Amerika, Russia, and China have no rule of law, only rules the peasants must follow.

Japan and the other nations of the world should (you'd think) have a faster learning curve, since Nazi Germany is a matter of record and the grandchildren of Hitler's American Henchmen are almost halfway to fufilling Grandpa Prescott's dream of an Evil Amerika that is "fit" to be a Nazi Ally.
