Senate postpones consideration of spy bill

By Thomas Ferraro 17 minutes ago

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Senate Democratic leader Harry Reid on Monday abruptly postponed until next month consideration of a measure to give immunity to telephone companies that participated in President George W. Bush's warrantless domestic spying program.

"Everyone feels it would be to the best interest of the Senate that we take a look at this when we come back after the first of the year," Reid, facing a pile of unfinished work, said on the Senate floor.

Reid's surprise announcement came hours after Bush's demand for immunity for the companies won an initial victory. The Senate voted 76-10 to clear a procedural hurdle and move toward consideration of the bill.

.....

The House of Representatives last month defied Bush and refused to shield phone companies from lawsuits. Both chambers would have to agree to immunity before it could be granted.

2. There's also a Wash Post article - here's the comment I left on that one:
Thank God Reid pulled this terrible bill. The telecoms MUST BE HELD responsible for breaking the law or what will keep them or other industries from thumbing their nose at our Constitution in the future? Future presidents must also know they are not above the law. These telecoms did this not out of any sense of duty, they did it to gain federal contracts and profits. Period. We will never find out what really happened if these lawsuits are not allowed to go forward. Remember, this was done 2 weeks after Bush took office, long before 9/11. They were eavesdropping on their opponents, not any enemies of our country. They probably have dirt on every Representative and Senator that's possible, along with judges etc.

Let Bush veto this terrible law. So what? Keep giving him the same laws and keep letting him use his veto pen. It's got tons of ink in it from all the years of Republican control of Congress.

Here's the link to that article:

3. "Future presidents must also know they are not above the law"
More importantly, the current president.

As you stated, the whole idea is to allow these lawsuits to expose ONE OF MANY CRIMINAL UNDERTAKINGS the Ass Emperor as perpetrated in the last six years!
