U.S. issues alert for stolen beef due to possible E. coli
Source: Reuters

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. regulators have issued a public health alert for about 14,800 pounds of missing ground beef products that may be contaminated with the potentially deadly E. coli bacteria, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said on Thursday.

The alert came after a trailer containing the ground beef was reported stolen by Texas American Food Service Corporation, the USDA said in a statement.

The firm, based in Fort Worth, Texas, does business as American Fresh Foods. A company spokesman could not be immediately reached for comment.

1. When we talk about "national security" - have any of the vacuum-packed....
...nincompoops in DC or elsewhere considered securing the food and water supply in the US? How about securing the borders? Welp. With all that poison coming in here from China I guess not, eh? After all CHEAP is what matters. If it kills ya, well at least you'd've saved a quarter. And that's what matters. Right?

Pfffffffffffffffft!

Safe food in the United States. Too much to expect I suppose.

Beef: It's what hasn't been for dinner at my house for over 10 years and never will be.

Goodnight, and Good Luck.

16. Don't kid yourself
E. Coli isn't just a beef issue at all. It is a MUCH bigger problem in fresh fruits and vegetables, especially those grown in other countries or those grown "organically" with manure fertilizer. Most beef is cooked thus eliminating the risk, a lot of fruits and veggies aren't cooked.

17. When the spinach E.Coli outbreak occurred..
... it was apparently because those picking it were crapping and pissing in the fields and /or not washing their hands -- due to the fact that they had inadequate facilities for the workers, and of course there are no safety inspections (the FDA/USDA is critically underfunded - but let's IGNORE that, shall we?).

18. I don't disagree, but many believe E.coli is a beef issue
and nothing could be further from the truth. It is an any food issue which is served uncooked or undercooked. As I stated below it has been around forever and for years has been referred to as stomach flu. Most people don't die from it they just get sick. Children, elderly, and immune deficient people are most at risk. The risk can be eliminated or at least minimized by thorough cooking.

My only point is that if you have quit eating beef because of E.coli you are kidding yourself.

19. You're right, it's not a beef-only issue and...
..I quit eating beef 'cause I just don't like meat - vegetarian.

I still assert that we need better inspection/controls of the food we eat and import - especially from CHINA. The FDA/USDA is grossly underfunded and I think this is a matter of national security.

It's too easy for our food to be contaminated or poisoned, however it happens.

2. Smells like Bullshit...
A "trailer load" of beef is much more, typically over 35K pounds....If it was contaminated at the plant why would they put a third of a load in a trailer when they have storage freezers? Where is the rest of that batch? Or did they only contaminate that 15k load, prep it for shipping, discover the problem, and then coincidentally have ONLY that partial trailer load stolen?

One daughter has already turned vegan (thanks to a DU post on the benefits), it's getting more and more convincing for the rest of us.

4. This seems like a strange alert
Are they assuming it now has e-coli because someone has stolen it? Or did they know beforehand that it was infected? I get someone hijacking the truck - but the e-coli bit doesn't wash - unless they are assuming it was infected after the fact.

Or is this a way for the company to collect on insurance of infected beef?

It's a tinhat moment.

9. It makes some ....
OMGEMERGENCYNATIONALSECURITYWE"REALLGONNADIEBYTERRORISMSense....

If it's packaged... and you had access to a supermarket or access to other lots of beef you could slip some of the e.coli contaminated beef in with the rest and poison a whole lot of people.

I'll bet in general people don't look at the labels when there's an alert.

Is that what's happening here? I have no idea...

10. Whodunnit
When newspapers don't use English

"reported stolen by Texas American Food Service Corporation"

Who stole it the Texas American Food Service?

Tfter reading it again I realized that what they meant was that it was reported by Texas American Food Service Corporation that the meat was stolen by an unknown entity, not themselves.

Rant over.

15. E. coli is really only a health issue
if the beef (or veggies, or chicken, or pork, or, or...) is uncooked or under cooked. I really didn't think anyone bought hamburger at the store anymore to eat it tar tar anyway? I often eat rare burgers but I thoroughly wash the roast then grind the beef myself. E.coli has always been around, it is nothing new, it used to be called (and sometimes still is) stomach flu (there is no such animal).

24. It's also a disgust issue
If a foodstuff's been contaminated- that generally means there's literally shit in it.

Not a very appealing thought.
